Free Invasive Plant Symposium October 27th

HUNTSVILLE – In order to inform the community on the destructive nature of non-native plants and on efforts in eradication and control, The Land Trust of Huntsville & North Alabama and the Alabama Invasive Plant Council are pleased to host a free symposium on invasive plants in the Tennessee Valley on Wednesday, October 27, 2004. This informative symposium will be held at The Lodge at Monte Sano State Park from 6 to 8:30 pm.

Geared to professional and homeowner alike, discussion topics will include Invasive Honeysuckle on Land Trust Properties, Privet Infestation at the Hays Preserve in Hampton Cove, Invasive Plants Throughout the Tennessee Valley, and others.

Special guest speaker will be Dr. James Miller, research ecologist for the USDA Forest Service and author of the book “Nonnative Invasive Plants of Southern Forests.”

Keynote Speaker: James Miller, Research Ecologist and Team Leader for Forest Vegetation Management and Longleaf Pine Research USDA Forest Service – ”Invasive Plants of the Southeast and Alabama’s Ten Worst Invasive List”

Keith Mandel, Geotechnical Engineer/Geologist, OMI, Inc. “Contributing Factors for Invasive Plant Opportunities”

Susan Weber, City of Huntsville Ecologist “Invasive Plants at the Hayes Preserve”

Kent Wilborn, Manager, Monte Sano State Park “Invasive Plants at Monte Sano State park”

Amy Werkheiser, Environmental Scientist, OMI, Inc., & Land Trust Board Member “A Study of Bush Honeysuckle Within the Monte Sano Preserve”
