Art Garfunkel to Perfrom in Huntsville

Tuesday April 5, 2005
It's back to the '60's for Huntsville when Grammy Award-winning recording star Art Garfunkel appears with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra for one of their popular Pops Concerts on Saturday, April 16, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. in the Von Braun Center Concert Hall. Mention About.com when calling for tickets at the Huntsville Symphony office and receive a 10% discount. Sponsor for the event is SAIC.

Garfunkel was originally revered for his Grammy-winning, chart-topping songs and albums with partner and fellow Queens native Paul Simon. Their greatest hits collection, which includes “Mrs. Robinson,” “Scarborough Fair,” “The Sound of Silence,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” among others is the biggest selling album ever by a duo. Their body of work earned them the Grammy “Lifetime Achievement Award” and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

During the concert's first half, William Grimes, well-known to HSO Pops audiences, will lead the orchestra in popular film score selections, including The Fellowship of the Rings, Apollo 13 and Silverado. Garfunkel will join Grimes and the HSO after intermission.

Tickets for the one-night only event may be purchased by phone at 256-539-4818 (mention About.com and get a 10% discount!) or online at www.hso.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door beginning at 6:30 the night of the show. Ticket prices range from $30 to $60, with student and group rates available.

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, North Alabama’s premiere performing arts organization, traces its beginnings back to the winter of 1954-55 and the presence of Wernher von Braun and his German rocket teams, whose arrival in Huntsville sparked an era of sensational growth. While the professional lives of these new residents were dedicated to visions of space exploration, they brought with them a lifelong passion for classical music. Many of the Germans played in the first orchestra. Their energy and influence set the tone for the vibrant cultural life enjoyed today by the residents of the Tennessee Valley. HSO provides high quality classical music performances and education to the entire region. More information is available at 539-4818 and www.hso.org.
