Detailed cast list:

SARAH

20, Sarah is a young woman who has little recollection of life outside the disaster riddled Southern Corridor after The Fall. She was a small child when her family left the suburbs to go into hiding. Now Sarah is a young widow who is pregnant with the only successful pregnancy in many years. She wants to find a place where she can bear her child and raise it with out the fear and seclusion she had to endure for so many years. She and her mother, Margaret, leave their basement home with Samuel when their water supply is running low and it becomes obvious that Sarah and her baby are in danger. While taking refuge in Three Caves Sarah meets Michael, whose voice has brought her comfort over the radio for some time. Sarah and Michael feel the bond of friendship very quickly, and it is with his help that she and her mother find a place in the city to take refuge. After surviving a dangerous journey from her home, to Three Caves and into the city she is able to deliver the child who will bring hope to a world struggling to overcome its terrible past. LEAD

MARGARET

45-50, Margaret is mother to both Sarah and David. She feels guilt and responsibility for David’s disappearance after his father’s death. Margaret is very protective of Sarah for fear that she may lose her as well. She finds an unexpected friend in Samuel when he joins her and Sarah as they leave for Three Caves. Margaret’s strength is a bolster for all those she comes to know. LEAD

MICHAEL

25, Michael has been alone since his father’s death. In the bunker they made their home he has passed his time by broadcasting radio shows and music from his short wave radio, to anyone or no one. He has little idea that people are listening, and that his voice out there makes a difference. When Pierre comes to ask him for help building a radio for the people of Three Caves he has all but given up. Joining those in the caves renews his sense of hope and eventually leads him to meet Sarah, Margaret and Samuel, changing his life forever. Michael and Sarah form a quick friendship that takes him into the city with them to find Harvey and take refuge there for the birth of Sarah’s child. LEAD.

DAVID

20-25, David is volatile, physically intimidating, smart and cruel. He is Margaret’s son, lost as a child when his father died of cholera in a refugee camp. Mynard found him by his dead father’s side and took him. David was raised from then on by Mynard to be a leader of sorts to the other children taken by her. They become known in the Corridor as Reevers. Over the years David has become more than volatile, he has become destructive to himself and those around him; yet, he has a weak spot for his surrogate brother Janus. David must eventually choose between loyalty to the terrible woman who raised him and the ties that still remain between him and his true family. LEAD.

SAMUEL

55-65, Samuel is a man without time. He has seen the pyramids built and the approaching of the end of the world. Samuel is not just one man, but many. He and his oldest companion, a vaudevillian ventriloquist dummy he calls Christo, have wound their way into the Southern Corridor as architects of circumstance. It was Samuel’s seemingly abandoned house Margaret and her family moved into when they went into hiding. The same house in which Christo had been left for the young Sarah. Samuel comes openly into the lives of Sarah and Margaret when he sees the tenuous possibilities and knows they need only a nudge in the right direction. His friendship breaths vitality back into their lives. At a crucial time he gives his life trying to show David that there can be reconciliation with his past. Samuel’s death makes it apparent what Sarah, Michael and Margaret must do next. LEAD.

PIERRE

25-30, Pierre is the caretaker of Three Caves. He leaves them only to seek out Michael, who he hopes can help them build a radio to reach out to other survivors who are trying to rebuild. Pierre and Michael become close friends and together build the radio that eventually reaches far enough to contact Harvey in the city. Without Pierre’s help Sarah might not have made it to a place where her child could be born. PRINCIPAL, 71 lines, 27 scenes.

MS. MYNARD

45-55, Ms. Mynard was once a woman whose family had both wealth and power. She was left alone and pregnant in the last days of The Fall. All but losing her mind she eventually delivered her own child, though he was damaged during the difficult birth, and in her madness after his birth called him Janus. Over the years she kidnapped other women’s healthy children, eventually taking David from his dead father’s side in a refugee camp. After years of no children being born alive, Mynard learns of Sarah’s pregnancy and her madness drives her to hunt her down in hopes of taking her child as soon as it is born. PRINCIPAL, 59 lines, 20 scenes.

DELINDA

15-18, Delinda and her twin sister Dilcy are inseparable. They speak a language comprised of acronyms representative of warning labels. Mynard taught them this when they were very young. They are so inseparable that one learned to speak the acronyms and the other to “translate” their meanings. Delinda, though the more lucid of the two, is the most disadvantaged by this language because it is she who speaks in acronyms. She and her sister are never far from Mynard’s side and are used by her mercilessly. PRINCIPAL, 10 lines, 18 scenes.

DILCY

15-18, Dilcy and her twin sister Delinda are inseparable. They speak a language comprised of acronyms representative of warning labels. Mynard taught them this when they were very young. They are so inseparable that one learned to speak the acronyms and the other to “translate” their meanings. Dilcy has been more deeply effected by her abusive surroundings, leaving her unable to understand much of what goes on around her. She and her sister are never far from Mynard’s side and are used by her mercilessly. PRINCIPAL, 11 lines, 17 scenes.

JANUS

20, Janus is Mynard’s only biological child. His mental and emotional shortcomings make him both dangerous and childlike. He is the only person David has ever been able to form a true bond with. In return David provides Janus with the friendship he has found in no one else. Janus is abused by his mother, Mynard, yet loves her deeply. In the end Janus is left with neither his mother or David, leaving his future uncertain. PRINCIPAL, 15 lines, 17 scenes.

QUINCY

45-55, Quincy is the somewhat mister-fixit and somewhat armorer at Three Caves. He is a good ole’ boy with an amazing talent for pyrotechnics, mechanics and distilling. Quincy is able to resurrect an old truck for Sarah, Margaret and Michael to take into the city. His loyalty and dedication lead him to his death while defending the caves from an onslaught by David and his Reevers. PRINCIPLE, 36 lines, 16 scenes.

HARVEY

35-55, Harvey is a man who ended up alone in the city as a child. He is jovial and retains much hope that things will improve and people will return to the city. Over the years he has stayed relatively safe in the theater he made his home. He has an enormous collection of pop culture items. It is Harvey that makes contact with Michael over his HAM radio, letting him know that if he, Sarah and Margaret come to the city they will find refuge with him. Harvey is in many ways an embodiment of the hope driving all those that remain. He is instrumental in Sarah’s safety. PRINCIPLE, 24 lines, 14 scenes.

ALLEN

18, Allen is innocence lost. He is deadly accurate with his rifle and serves as one of the guards to Three Caves. His emotional scars run deep and his loyalty to Ms. Mynard will lead him to betray Pierre and abandon his surrogate family, endangering Sarah, Margaret and Michael as they journey to the city. Allen too is betrayed by Mynard who gruesomely disposes of him in order to serve her plans. 1 line, 10 scenes.

ANTARES

Older (voice only), Antares is the voice that David perceives as speaking to him from a distant star, giving him guidance when he is troubled. This voice is deep and hollow. 4 lines, 2 scenes.

BABY SAMANTHA

Infant, Sarah’s new born daughter. 3 scenes.

GEORGE

45, Margaret’s husband who died of cholera in a refugee camp, leaving their son David alone at his side. 2 scenes.

LIAM

16, Liam is an unfortunate soul out of place in the Southern Corridor. He tries to be brave, and help Pierre scout for supplies, but his jitteriness and fear lead him to an early end. 1 scene.

SAMANTHA

7, Sarah’s child years after our story ends. She is healthy and happy, a true embodiment of hope for the future of the Southern Corridor. 2 scenes.

TEENAGE GIRLS

17, These two girls represent the wonder, imagination and ingenuity that can still exist, even in a broken world. Through their puppet shows they show the people of the cave that all is not lost. Samuel finds them kindred spirits and encourages them, joining in their act. 1 line, 1 scene.

YOUNG DAVID

8, David was always a sullen but bright child. During the years and months before The Fall he was terrified of the fear he heard in his parent’s voices when they thought he wasn’t listening. David was somewhat resentful of his baby sister, Sarah, seeing her as another source of worry for his already troubled family. After The Fall his darker tendencies grew. He was an easy victim for Ms. Mynard as he sat terrified and angry at his dead father’s side. 1 scene.
