Here's what I learned in Huntsville this week: (1) October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Hope Place is Huntsville's Women's Shelter. Mark your calendar for October 11 from 6-7 pm when Crisis Services of North AL will sponsor the annual Candlelight Vigil in Wade Hall at Oakwood College You can celebrate with survivors and mourn those whose lives have been taken due to domestic violence. There will be live music, an art exhibit and light refreshments.

(2) Ladies, treat yourself and a friend to Emma's Tea Room's Autumn Afternoon Tea on Saturday, Oct. 13th from 4:00-6:00 pm. Limited seating. For a info or reservation, call (256) 489-5850.

(3) Huntsville Twickenham Rose Society 50th Anniversary Rose Show is taking place on first floor at Parkway Place this Saturday, October 6th. Public invited to enter to compete: 7:00 am-10:30 am entries accepted; 10:00a m-4:00 pm display. For more info, call Bill Chappell at (256)880-3773.

(4) Worried about your kids getting safely to school? Then you may want to check out the Safe Routes to School Program (SRTS). The SRTS program allows local communities to submit funding proposals to Alabama DOT to address roadway and safety issues such as congestion within school zones and inadequate pedestrian facilities. Deadline for proposals is November 30th.

(5) It's time to take in a movie again: National Geographic's Sea Monsters in 3D will open at Rave this Friday. This show was previously available in Imax locations only. Educators can contact toll free 1-866-878-7068 to arrange Field Trips. Otherwise check local movie schedule.

(6) The Birmingham Zoo recently announced plans for a $15 million “Trails of Africa” exhibit set to open in 2009. This 14-acre exhibit will be a showcase for a variety of African animals and will be used as a center for elephant care and conservation.

(7) The Governor’s Mansion Gift Shop, 30 Finley Avenue in Montgomery, is now offering shirts, tumblers, pins, stickers, and other “Sweet Home Alabama” logo merchandise. For merchandise ordering information call (334) 241-8824.

(8) Don't miss the wine & cheese tasting book signing October 4th at Harrison Brothers Hardware on the square. Jacque Reeves will be signing copies of her new book, Historic Photos of Huntsville, from 5-7:30 pm.
