Here's some new things I learned this week in Huntsville:
The Alabama A&M University Choir and the AAMU Gospel Choir will perform and record holiday-themed music for a CD in a free concert on Friday, November 2, at The Rock Family Worship Center, at 2300 Memorial Parkway SW, at 7 p.m. Public invited. Donations will go towards the groups trip to Germany to perform. For more info, call (256) 372-5512.
More from Alabama A&M: In the Oct. 31 issue of the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, AAMU scientists report that boiling peanuts (a favorite in the South), fills them with more antioxidants than roasted peanuts or peanut butter and up to four times more isoflavones than raw peanuts or oil- and dry-roasted ones. Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks, grew up in Huntsville and worked as a consultant for UAH. Hendricks created the Discovery Channel in 1982 as the first cable network in the United States designed to provide high quality documentary programming enabling people to explore their world and satisfy their curiosity. First Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Bankhead Parkway is holding a nondenominational outdoor Jazz Vesper service on Sunday, November 4th at 4:30 p.m and consisting of secular and sacred readings and music. They are timing the service to coincide with sunset and plan to do the service outside at the cross overlooking the city. Sounds like a unique experience. For more info, call (256) 656-3536. Tuesday, Nov. 6th from noon-5 pm, WiseScrappers on Hwy 72 E in Gurley is hosting a open house "Prairie Day," complete with "Laura Ingalls Wilder" (have photo taken with her), food from Laura's cookbook, live prairie time music by local homeschoolers, etc. $10 per family (up to 6). Registration deadline is Oct. 30th. For more info, call (256) 776-4730. Longhorn Steakhouse on Carl T. Jones is now open for business. Here's their menu. For more info, call (256) 882-2611. Another Broken Egg is opening soon in the same shopping center. They are currently hiring staff. For more info, call (256) 883-2915.
Looking for some family fun? You're invited to Trinity United Methodist Church on Airport Road for their Fall Festival and Picnic outside on the church grounds this Sunday, Oct. 28th from 4-6:30 pm. Enjoy BBQ ($5 adults, $2 kids), live music, bingo, silent auction, trunk or treat, "cookies & coke" walk, carnival games, inflatable moon bounces and super slide and lots of treats & prizes. Costumes encouraged. For more info, call (256) 883-3200. ... more insider info...
