Snakes in Alabama

I'm not sure about you, but I'm very afraid of accidentally discovering a snake when walking in the woods or hiking in the mountains around Huntsville. Fortunately, only four types of poisonous snakes live in Alabama and are described along with tips on how to deal with them should you be unlucky enough to "meet their acquaintance." Fred Anderson sent me two pictures and a note about snakes, "I'm an avid hiker, and come across snakes all the time in the spring and fall. Summer's a little hot, and they tend to only come out at night from late June until mid-September. You'll be pleased to note that of all the snakes I've encountered (literally a hundred or more), I've only encountered two timber rattlers (photo at right) and one copperhead. All the others were non-venomous, usually rat snakes or black racers. The rat snakes are very laid back and easy to catch; not aggressive at all. Very cool to pick up and examine." Well...no thanks, I'll keep my distance, thank you.
