Huntsville Insider Info...

Friday March 28, 2008
Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
  • We're "green," according to Move Trends. "Huntsville, Alabama, proves that every city, no matter its size and location, can hop onto the green wagon. National Geographic’s Green Guide has placed this town at number 9 among the top 10 green cities in the U.S." Yea, Huntsville!
  • New to Panoply 2008--the Art Educator’s Tent will be used to showcase and sell the work of public and private school art teachers or art instructors and professors teaching in area colleges and universities. Each Art Educator may present up to four pieces to a jury appointed by The Arts Council. Panoply is April 25-27 this year. For more info, call (256) 519-2787 (ARTS).
  • If you love music, check out this festival: The Huntsville Community Chorus Association (HCCA) and the Huntsville Chamber Music Guild (HCMG) announce ChoirFest 2008: The Huntsville Choral Festival, April 3-6, 2008. The HCCA chorus will open the Grand Festival Concert at 7:30 p.m., April 5, 2008 at First Baptist Church as the final concert of the HCCA season. In addition, an estimated chorus of 300+ will perform at the Grand Festival Concert on Saturday night, with a performance by the well-known male chorus, Cantus. An additional performance by Cantus is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 2008 at Trinity United Methodist Church as part of the HCMG Celebrity Series. For more info, call 533-6606.
  • Dinner by Design in Jones Valley Target Shopping Center is celebrating their one year anniversary on Sat. March 29th from 10 am - 4 pm. Door prize drawings held hourly, free samples, in store specials, fun water tattoos & treats for the kids. For more info, call 650-1266.
  • Windham Entertainment is looking for about 5 attractive women and 5 attractive men to play 40s-50s couples. Must photograph well. For more info, call (256) 489-8080.
  • If you’ve ever wondered how a company that sells chicken sandwiches got into the “cow business,” you won’t want to miss the Tennessee Valley Advertising Federation’s April 17 luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Redstone Federal Credit Union’s Education Center on Wynn Drive. TVAF will present Greg Ingram, Chick-Fil-A’s senior manager of marketing programs (and Huntsville High School graduate!), to discuss how the “Eat Mor Chikin” campaign has revolutionized Chick-Fil-A’s sales and public relations. Cost for the event is $15 for members; $20 for nonmembers. For more info, call Pam Sparks at 265-2621.
  • The first Preliminary Round of Panoply's “HOMEGROWN TALENT CONTEST” will take place this Saturday, March 29, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Parkway Place Mall, 2801 Memorial Pkwy, SW in Huntsville. There are 3 categories: Adult, Youth (age TEN and up), and Group. Material must be G-rated. For more info, call (256) 519-2787 (ARTS), extension 205. Other dates are April 6 at Bridge Street Town Centre and April 12 at Madison Square Mall.
  • OK, Ladies, you'll enjoy this: Friday, March 28 7:30 pm and Sat March 29 7:30 pm, The Vagina Monologues will be presented at the Flying Monkey Art Center. As part of the 2008 V-Day Community Campaign, Huntsville is proud to present a benefit production of The Vagina Monologues to raise awareness and funds for local organizations working to end violence against women and girls. Proceeds benefit The Huntsville Free Clinic. Admission charged ($10-$15).
