THINGS I LEARNED THIS WEEK:
  • Ken Clark, About's Guide to Saving for College, has written a detailed review of Alabama Higher Education Section 529 Fund. If you have kids that will be heading to college soon, you might want to read this 3-page analysis of pros & cons.
  • The New York Times article “Amid the Ghosts of Alabama” on April 18 profiled three ghost towns--Claiborne, St. Stephens, and Cahaba--that are within two hours’ drive of Mobile and Birmingham. If you like digging into the past, you might want to check these towns out further.
  • There's a lot going on at the Huntsville Botanical Garden: the first "Concert at the Columns" series is set to begin on May 2nd at 7 pm and features The Rocket City Brass. For more info, call 256-830-4447 ext. 241. The butterflies are back in the Nature Center and, don't forget the dinosaurs are hiding in the Garden through the summer.
  • Want to save a few pennies? Head to the post office and get some more Forever stamps. The cost of sending a first-class letter will rise a penny to 42 cents on May 12, but the Forever stamps -- currently selling for 41 cents -- will remain valid for full postage after the increase.
  • Huntsville's women's shelter, Hope Place, is always in need of paper products and gift cards from Wal-Mart, Target, & Kroger. If you'd like to help, you can bring items to 208 Exchange Place. Call (256)716-4052 for directions.
  • There are still good tickets available for the Huntsville Hospital Foundation's May 16th Sara Evans Concert in the VBC Arena. Tickets are $25 for box seats and $20 for upper level seats at www.ticketmaster.com, any Ticketmaster outlet or at the Huntsville Hospital Foundation office. For more info, call call 265-8077.
  • Huntsville's Make-A-Wish's 1st annual Wish Upon a Star Gala will be at The Westin at Bridge Street on May 9th from 6:30 pm until 12:00 midnight. Last year, North Alabama granted the wishes of 20 children with life threatening illnesses. Mr. Gene Stallings will be the Honorary Chairperson for this event. For more info, call 256-799-1198.
  • Ketchup is now open for lunch from 11 am until 3 pm. A friend, visiting from Arizona, and I had lunch there over the weekend. I finally got to try the "Shake 'N Bake"--a pistachio-crusted chicken breast with raspberry-Dijon sauce. It was delicious!
  • If you're a music lover, then you'll want to check out HCCA presenting the Huntsville Community Chamber Chorale in concert with the Huntsville Chamber Winds on May 4 at 3 pm at Weatherly Heights Baptist Church. For more info, call 256.533.6606.
  • Where is the coolest place in Decatur to meet two former Olympians? The Point Mallard Ice Complex. World Champions, John Zimmerman and Silvia Fontana will be visiting Decatur Monday, May 5 to offer a FREE Basic Skills Class to anyone interested in learning the art of ice skating. The class will begin at 7:00 p.m. These two Olympians will also teach a two day camp for local intermediate and advanced skaters on May 5 & 6. Anyone interested in the basic skills class should contact Charles Bernhard at 341-4910.
