Huntsville Insider Info

THINGS I LEARNED THIS WEEK:
  • Huntsville Hospital is the lead agency for Huntsville area Safe Kids, and this Saturday (May 10) from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. is "Gear Up for Safety" at Safety City, 2221 Drake Avenue. There will be interactive displays, a bicycle rodeo, firefighters/police officers/Kids Care ambulance, big slide and moon bounce, refreshments/games/giveaways ... ETC! Everything is FREE. Parents can get their child's ID card. For more info, call 265-7288.
  • After 4 pm, Market Street Café in Providence is now renting out the entire restaurant any night of the week for special occasions. For menu options and more info, call (256) 489-6273.
  • Congratulations to Sam Tumminello, whose short movie 'Wonder Water" was awarded first place in the Senior Division by ''Videomaker'' magazine (May 2008). Tumminello, a Huntsville resident and member of the Alabama Filmmakers Co-op, produced and directed the movie.
  • The Rubber Stamp Lady store is closing soon. They are having an “Attic Sale” in the space next door Friday, May 9th from 9:30 am until 6:00 pm, and Saturday, May 10th from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm. This is a "cash only" sale. Everything for sale. For more info, call (256) 880-1106.
  • I love to go out for lunch. So, I was disappointed when Pauli's decided to close for lunch last year. Now, however, they are asking your opinion--are you interested in Pauli's opening for lunch? If so, let them know.
  • 801 Franklin is hosting "Women Who Wine" May 17th from 2:30-4:30 pm. Join Lara Isbell & Glinda Clardy of The Wine Source for an afternoon just for women. They will be demonstrating how to make no-fuss, gourmet hors d'oeuvres perfect for impromptu summer entertaining. They will also be discussing the appropriate wines to pair with the fantastic appetizers. For more info, call (256) 519-5019.
  • On Saturday May 24, the Huntsville Stars will host the first ever “Meatloaf Night” at Joe Davis Stadium prior to the team's game against the Birmingham Barons at 2:05 PM. That's right--forget the barbecue cook-offs, the watermelon spitting contests, the chili recipes--American's favorite comfort food, meatloaf, has finally found a contest to shout about. Contact Matt Price in the Stars' office at (256) 882 – 2562 or at matt@huntsvillestars.com to register for a position to participate in the cookoff. The meatloaf should be cooked prior to arrival at the ballpark. Once the gates are opened, fans will be allowed to taste the various loaves and vote for their favorite. The person with the winning meatloaf recipe will take home a Stars prize pack that will include a pair of 2009 Stars season tickets and, of course, a blue ribbon.
  • A senior elementary education major at Alabama A&M University will compete for the national title of Miss Black USA next month. Birmingham, Ala., native and Atlanta resident Andretta Rhone currently holds the title of Miss Black Alabama USA 2008. Congratulations & good luck, Andretta!
  • The 2008 Huntsville International Airshow is coming June 28 - 29, and they are in need of volunteers (over 16 years old) to help.
