Huntsville's Weekend Weather...by James Payton
On the weather map...A strong cold front will produce a threat of a few severe thunderstorms Thursday. Slightly drier air will move in Friday & Saturday before another strong cold front arrives on Sunday...bringing rain & perhaps another round of strong thunderstorms for Mother's Day. Now my Tennessee Valley weekend forecast...
For Friday...Partly cloudy. Very small risk of a stray storm. High 80.
Friday Night...Partly cloudy. Very slight risk of a shower continues. Low 58.
Saturday...Cloudy. A thunderstorm possible in the afternoon. High 81.
Saturday Night...Cloudy with scattered rain & storms possible. Low 63.
Sunday...Cloudy with showers & thunderstorms likely. A few strong storms possible. High 76.
Last week's weather trivia question...How large does a hailstone in a thunderstorm need to be for the storm to be classified as 'severe'?
Correct answer was b. 3/4 inch in diameter. Although any storm which contains hail is considered strong...the National Weather Service will not classify a storm as severe for hail unless it gets to 3/4 inch in diameter (the size of dimes or larger).
This week's question...According to the U.S. Geological Survey...if one inch of rain falls on one acre of land, approximately how many gallons of water fell on that acre of land?
a. 6,840 gallons b. 12,256 gallons c. 19,898 gallons d. 27,154 gallons
Have a great weekend...& Happy Mother's Day!
