Here's what I learned in Huntsville this week:
Huntsville residents have an opportunity to take Sports Safety Course. It's free (coupon code is: HUNTSVILLE2-5/2008) and available online. It is provided by the State of Alabama through a grant with Alabama State University and the National Center for Sports Safety. The goal is to decrease the number of injuries by helping youth and high school sporting events to become safer venues through emergency action planning. For more info, call (256) 564-8026.
According to a recent Huntsville Stars' newsletter, the city of Huntsville is planning to update the sound system at Joe Davis Stadium sometime this summer. "The design is to have 10 torpedo speakers installed above the seating bowl under the eaves of the stadium and everybody will then hear everything."
Harrison Brothers Hardware has their spring open house Thursday, May 15th from 5-8 pm spotlighting local artist Leslie Lockhart and serving hors d'oeuvres from Papou's Greek Cuisine. For more info, call (256) 536-3631.
One week left to register for the Tennessee Valley Corridor National Summit with Congressman Bud Cramer (D-AL), as well as Senators Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and Bob Corker (R-TN), Congressman Zach Wamp (R-TN) and U.S. Army Chief of Staff General George Casey. The event will take place May 28-29 at the Von Braun Center. The online registration deadline for the event is May 21. For more info, call (615) 329-9525.
Did to get in shape? Carter Hays is the personal trainer of The Biggest Loser, season 4 contestant David Griffin. David lost more than 140 lbs. in six months while training on the show and at D1 Nashville. Carter is conducting a special seminar June 6-7 at D1 Huntsville to educate and help others reach their health & fitness goals. For more information, contact Corey Remillard at (256) 880-1717.
The Huntsville Botanical Garden will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Sunday, May 18th with a Family Picnic for the Community. The celebration will be from 1 till 4 pm in the Children’s Garden. There will be "bouncy" fun, games and prizes for the kids. Bring a picnic or purchase barbecue, shaved ice and many other goodies from local vendors. There will be birthday cake for everyone. This special event is included in regular Garden admission. For more info, call (256) 830-4447.
