Huntsville Insider Info

Friday June 13, 2008
Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
  • The Huntsville Botanical Garden is celebrating Armed Forces Week by offering all active and retired military and their families free access to the Garden. Military personnel simply need to show their military ID any time during the week of June 23 – 29, 2008 for free admission to the Garden.
  • Here's some good news: Five nursing homes in Alabama received My InnerView’s Excellence in Action award, a national honor recognizing exemplary nursing home quality care and service. The nursing homes cited include Burns Nursing Home in Russellville, Falkville Health Care Center in Falkville, Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home in Killen, Madison Manor Nursing Home, LLC in Madison, and SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Muscle Shoals in Muscle Shoals.
  • Bridge Street is the place for some great music: the Army Concert Band and Jazz Band will perform Monday June 16th at 6:30 pm in front of Monaco Pictures.
  • Mountain High Outfitters is offering Nature Conservancy Night June 12 from 6-8 pm, a free hike through Cane Creek Canyon in Huntsville June 14th-28th, and "Introduction to Rock Climbing" class where you'll learn basic climbing techniques in a day trip to Hurricane Creek, AL on July 19th, Aug. 16th & Sept. 21st. For more info, call (256) 327-8438.
  • Join Yankee Doodle Dandies as Alabama Constitution Village celebrates the American flag as part of the Super Saturday series on June 14th. The Village, located at 109 Gates Ave., will feature many flag themed activities for the entire family to enjoy starting at 10 a.m. For more info, call EarlyWorks at (256) 564-8100.
  • Huntsville/Madison County Leadership’s Connect Class Seven presents “Barking 4 Bucks”, a fundraising event for our city’s Dog Spot. The event is Sunday, June 29th from 2-5pm and takes place at the Downtown Dog Park. Enter to win prizes and let your pretty pooch compete for the title of King or Queen of The Dog Spot. Enjoy complimentary hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks. Admission is a monetary donation of your choice. All proceeds go directly to the City of Huntsville’s Dog Spot. For more info, call Kerri at (256) 533-2507 x226.
  • The Dolce Group presents “Ketchup for a Cause” with United Cerebral Palsy of Huntsville and Tennessee Valley, Inc. on Monday, June 23, beginning at 4 p.m. at Ketchup in Bridge Street Town Centre. Enjoy live entertainment and food and drink specials throughout the evening with a portion of the night’s sale donated to UCP. For more info, call Tracy at (256) 859-4900.
