Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
  • Broadway Theatre League has announced the following shows for their 2008-2009 season: The Pajama Game, Sweeney Todd, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Monty Python's Spamalot, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, HAPPY DAYS - A New Musical, The Rat Pack, and James & the Giant Peach.   • Set for July 3-4, the Spirit of America Festival in Decatur features the Miss Point Mallard Pageant, presentation of the Audie Murphy Patriotism Award and other freedom awards along with the Spirit Idol competition, children’s bike parade, ongoing live music, children’s inflatable’s, a ventriloquist show, caricatures for kids, the popular Ping Pong Ball Drop, food and crafts vendors and a huge fireworks display on the night of the fourth. In concert on the Festival Stage beginning at 9 p.m. on July 3 is 7Mary3. Set to perform on July 4 are Anna Brooke Higdon, Gary Preiss and 8 Mile Creek, Gary McKenzie, and Reginald Jackson. Admission is free.
  • You have until June 29th to bid on the 41 ebay auction items from the 4th of July events, Bridge Street Town Center and The Exchange Club of Greater Huntsville. All proceeds benefit the National Children’s Advocacy Center’s “Stop Child Abuse Now” (SCAN) program.
  • 801 Franklin and their chef is again offering cooking classes that will be perfect for couples, neighbors, friends or those "girls who grill." The first one is features Great American Grilling this Saturday, June 28th from 11 am-2 pm, the other classes will be July 26th & August 30th.   • If you haven't been to the Weeden House Museum lately, you might want to stop by soon. Until further notice, admission is free on Mondays, with refreshments and tours at 11 am and 1 pm.
  • Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is featured as one of the world’s top fantasy camps in the recent Forbes magazine article “Eight Places to Live Out Your Fantasies.” With gas prices so high, maybe we should just stay home & live out our fantasies right here in Huntsville.
  • Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail was named the nation's #1 best golf value in the just released 2008 Travel and Destination Study issued by Golf Digest magazine and the Travel Industry of America. Besides the top value ranking, the RTJ Golf Trail also made the Top 10 for golf quality in the national survey.
  • Did you see the May issue of Southern Living? It has a feature on places to stop along I-65. Some of those mentioned are the Ardmore Welcome Center, Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur, Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman, American Village in Montevallo, Peach Park in Clanton, Lek's in Montgomery, Priester's Pecans in Fort Deposit, Bates House of Turkey in Greenville, Hank Williams's Boyhood Home & Museum in Georgiana, David's Catfish in Atmore and Wintzell's Oyster House in Saraland. (note: June 3rd, Wintzell's opened its first franchise on the Lake in Guntersville, AL located at 14455 US Hwy 431 South. For more info, call (256) 582-5600.)
  • Point Mallard Ice Complex announces a special session celebrating Independence Day and will be open for public skating from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. on July 4th for only $2 and free skate rental.
  • A new U.S. postage stamp featuring Alabama’s state flag was unveiled Tuesday by Gov. Bob Riley. The stamp is part of the U.S. Postal Service’s “Flags of Our Nation” series and depicts the state flag alongside an image of a shrimp boat and the state’s Gulf Coast.
  • There's always a blood shortage in the summer. This year, celebrate the 4th of July by giving blood and receiving a gift yourself. Donate July 2 and July 4 from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. or July 3 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at LifeSouth Donor Centers at Huntsville Hospital and Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children or July 2nd from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Huntsville Hospital Medical Mall and be entered to win one of three $100 gasoline cards. All donors receive $20 movie gift card, recognition item and free cholesterol screening. Call 265-6340 to schedule an appointment.
