Huntsville Insider Info

Friday July 4, 2008
Here's what I learned in Huntsville this week:
  • The family of the late Jerome “Buddy” Cooper has preserved forever 23 acres in the Mentone area – including about ¼ mile of riverfront on The Little River West Fork – by donating the land to The Land Trust of Huntsville & North Alabama. Buddy Cooper had a long distinguished career as a labor and civil rights lawyer. The Land Trust is dedicated to the preservation of natural lands for public enjoyment and prosperity in ten counties of North Alabama and, since 1987, has protected and maintains over 5,100 acres and has created 33+ miles of public trails on three land preserves – each larger than Central Park and all within Huntsville city limits.
  • Once upon a time there was a great French restaurant in Huntsville called Green Bottle Grill. For years there were two chefs roaming the cook line and cooking all the great food everyone in town talked about. Their names Chef Matt Martin and Chef Andy Howery. Andy had moved to Florida to help open a restaurant, but now he's back and he's joining Chef Matt at Pauli's. Stop by soon and see what they're cooking up!
  • Hunter's Hotline, is an anonymous and confidential way for students, parents, and faculty to report any dangerous or suspicious activity. It's based on Hunter Stephenson who died his senior year of high school from an overdosing of drugs mixed with alcohol. His mom created the group SADD (students against destructive decisions) at Huntsville High School to prevent future tragedies. Hunter's Hotline number is (256) 536-4915.
  • If you love Oprah, then you'll want to check this out: Here's Oprah's picks of good books to read this summer. Most are probably available at the Huntsville Public Library.
  • If high gas and airline ticket prices have got you down, then think about enjoying a summer get-away right here in Huntsville. Staying locally also gives the opportunity to be eligible for a drawing to win a “Stay-cation” package worth $1,000. If you spend a night in a local hotel during July through August 8th you can drop-off a copy of your receipt or fax a copy (256) 551-2324 to the Convention & Visitor’s center.
  • Sci-Quest has registered with the ShopforMuseums.com program. There are many retailers we use as a business that are part of this program such as Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Oriental Trading and Office Depot. If it is possible to make those purchases online, Sci-Quest will benefit. Many online stores you use at home are also available such as Ebay, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Zappos, etc. Now you can shop online and help out Sci-Quest, too! For more info or a complete list of merchants, call Brianna at (256) 837-0606 ext. 223.
  • Join Huntsville Alive! on Thursday July 17 in a FREE Adult Self-Defense workshop from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Alexander's Martial Arts on 407 Jordan Lane. Participants should wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move around in. The workshop will start right at 7, so get there early!
