Huntsville Insider Info

Friday July 11, 2008
Here's some things I learned this week in Huntsville:
  • Put on your walking shoes and be a part of the celebration and the inaugural lap around the new Huntsville Hospital Walking Trail at Bridge Street Town Center on Saturday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m. Following the inaugural lap, enjoy refreshments and fun for the whole family including fitness demonstrations, pavement performers, face painting, balloon twisters and shoe fitting. Those who join the Huntsville Hospital Walking Club at the kickoff event will receive a free t-shirt while supplies last. Walking Club participation makes you eligible for great prizes courtesy of Huntsville Hospital Wellness Center, Bridge Street Town Centre and Mountain High Outfitters. For more information or to sign up a walking team, call 265-8317.
  • The Grapevine invites you for their first wine tasting which will include eight selections of ROSE', Saturday, July 12, 4 pm-6 pm. We have been graciously invited to have our tasting events at VINOTINI--next to PAULI's on Slaughter Road. Buy a tasting ticket for $10 per person--and save your receipt for $5 off any bottle purchased that same evening at the GRAPEVINE. For more information, call (256) 489-1571.
  • Ah, beautiful Land Trust trails…33+ miles of forests, mountain streams, and wildflowers all within Huntsville city limits. Looking for a fun outdoor volunteer opportunity that will help this great organization? Join their Trail Care Crew that meets twice a month to create and maintain quality public trails on our three land preserves and other properties. Ages 10 and up. Tools and training provided. For more info, call Andy Prewett at (256) 534-5263 or andy@landtrust-hsv.org.
  • Green Herbs of the Earth on Green Mountain is offering a variety of two-hour Herb Classes For Fun and Well Being: Holistic Dog Care, Aromatherapy 101, Making Herbal Gifts, Nature Baby, The Art of Herbal Tea, Herbal Papermaking, and The Aromatic Home (green cleaning). For more info and a class schedule, call Marianne at (888) 223-8019 or email Junebugsoap@comcast.net.
  • The World-famous Junaluska Singers will be present a one night only performance concert in the Trinity Methodist Church Sanctuary on Wednesday, July 23rd at 7:00 p.m. The 16-member choir is known for their wide variety of music including sacred music, folk tunes, gospel favorites, patriotic selections and music of Broadway. Tickets for the performance are $10 for adults and $5 for children and youth, and can be purchased at the Trinity UMC church office at 607 Airport Road, or at the door the evening of the concert. For more info, call 883-3200 x 207.
  • Super Saturdays at EarlyWorks continues July 19th with Dig Those Dinosaurs at EarlyWorks Children's Museum, Lego Magic at Huntsville Depot, and Clownin' Around at Alabama Constitution Village. For more info, call (256) 564-8100.
  • There's a new art gallery in town: at the Von Braun Center outside The Art Council. The opening art@TAC free reception will be held in the hallways of the VBC near the TAC offices on Sunday, July 13 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Included in the first show “Huntsville” will be such area artists as Sam Tumminello, Katrina Weber, Alan Davis, Johanna Littleton, José Betancourt, Brandon Gardner, and Kara Fuller.
  • Alabama can again claim to have the nation's lowest state and local taxes per person. New U.S. Census Bureau reports for fiscal 2006 show Alabama's state, county and city governments collected $2,782 in taxes per person. The national median, with half the states below and half above, was $3,700.
  • CrossWinds Church at 8089 Wall Triana Highway, one mile north of Nick Davis, is presenting Terrific Tuesdays absolutely free as a community service and outreach. Join them July 15: Wild Water Night (water slides, water balloons, and lots of water-soaked fun! Bring a towel, your kids will need it!) 6-8 pm, July 22: Lawn Chair Theatre Night (a family-friendly movie under the stars.
