Huntsville Insider Info

Friday July 18, 2008
Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
  • The public is invited to Remember and Celebrate Landing on the Moon with the Annual “Lunar Communion Service” at Monte Sano United Methodist Church, 601 Monte Sano Blvd., Huntsville on Sunday, July 20, 2008. The special Lunar Communion Services are 8:30 and 10:55. Hans Finzel, who grew up in Huntsville in the midst of the space program and whose father was on Von Braun’s team, will be the special speaker. Astronaut Dr. Jan Davis, will lead the Children’s Minute during the services and at 10:00 in the Fellowship Hall, she will share her experiences of flying on three missions during which she orbited the earth 325 times. For more info, call (256) 533-6083.
  • Football fans, this is for you: The new “Varsity Sports Media’s Alabama Football” magazine will be available statewide August 2008. The 208-page magazine will be the first of its kind in Alabama with coverage of the 428 AHSAA and AISA varsity high school football teams, player statistics, recruiting information, color photography, feature stories by professional sports reporters and 2008 schedules for every high school program. The magazine will also cover Alabama’s 15 collegiate programs, including comprehensive preseason coverage of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, UAB Blazers and Troy Trojans.
  • Dick's Sporting Goods will open its second Huntsville store, at Valley Bend at Jones Farm on the northwest side of the development, near Fleet Feet Sports. The 48,000-square-foot store should open spring 2009.
  • Want to be a Derby Girl? Referee? Now is your chance--Dixie Derby Girls is now recruiting. No experience is required. Have to be 19 and able to stay up on skates and skate around the rink without falling. They teach the rest. Check them out this Sunday, July 20th, 7:30 pm at RollerTime Skate Center, 707 Arcadia Circle, as they take on the Classic City Roller Girls (from Athens, Georgia). Half time entertainment will be provided by the Tennessee Valley Vipers Cheerleaders. $10 admission, under 6 years is free; First 50 with Valid Military ID get in free. • It's a Beach Bash at the Huntsville Depot, 320 Church St., this Saturday, July 19, with lots of water activities. Travel around the world at EarlyWorks, 404 Madison St., where kids can get a passport and have it stamped in Scotland, Australia, Africa, Spain, Mexico, Japan and Russia. Learn an African dance, make a Faberge egg and many other activities. Each country features a craft, game, costume or musical instrument. At Constitution Village, 109 Gates Ave., the theme is Party Animals. Kids can pet a sheep then learn to spin wool into thread and weave at the Friendly loom. Also meet llamas, squirrels, possums and other party animals. Everything takes place from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. For more info, call (256) 564-8100.
