Huntsville Insider Info

Friday July 25, 2008
Here's what I learned in Huntsville this week:
  • Junior Achievement of Northern Alabama (JANA) is looking for teams to participate in their 23rd Annual Bowl-A-Thon event to be held August 23 and 24. This fun team building event is open to the public and offers prizes, fun and camaraderie. For more information, call (256) 533-4661.
  • Get an early start on your "holiday mood" when Mannheim Steamroller kicks off their Christmas tour at the Von Braun Center on November 23rd at 7 pm. Mannheim Steamroller's signature sound is where classical and modern-day rock, acoustic and electronic music meet. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 25th at 10 am. All seats will be reserved for $66. Tickets will be available at the VBC Box Office, www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 800-277-1700 and all Ticketmaster outlets.
  • The Constitution Village hosts a day of historic sports and games as part of the Super Saturday series on July 26 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. At Huntsville Depot, the theme is Billions of Bubbles and at EarlyWorks, the theme is Splishin’ and Splashin’. Don't miss the fun!
  • Ovation Arts is doing “My Very Own Story” by Alan Ayckbourn. This is their last show as they are closing on July 30, 2008. Please show your support of this theatre group by supporting them at performances Friday, July 25 at 7:30 Pm, Saturday, July 26 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, July 27 at 2:30 PM. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling (256) 468-0237.
  • Help! My kitty has fallen...and she can't get up. Not without your help, at least. Sabrina (#014) is falling fast in the Greater Huntsville Humane Society Calendar Contest. If you enjoy this newsletter, I'd really appreciate it if you could donate a few dollars in Sabrina's name. You can vote at the GHHS booth in Parkway Place (in the food court, just to the left of the escalator), or by mailing or delivering donations to the shelter at: 2812 Johnson Rd., Huntsville, AL 35805 or calling (256) 881-8081 to vote by phone with Mastercard or Visa. Just $5 or $10 will help. Let me know if you do because I'd like to send you a personal thank you.
  • One reader sent me this information about the Polly Klaas Foundation's FREE Child Safety Kit, 24 pages of guidance for parents. Teach abduction prevention without scaring your child (or yourself). Includes two Fingerprint/DNA ID Documents to record your child's personal information. Something every parent of small children should send for.
  • Emma's Tea Room is hosting a "Dolly, Mommy and Me" Tea Party fundraiser for the National Children's Advocacy Center. The fundraiser will be Sunday, August 17th at 2 pm There will be door prizes from Maren Publishing, Emma Lea Books, Discovery Toys, and Emma's Tea Room, to name a few. All profits will go to the NCAC. $20 per person. For more info, call (256) 489-5850.
  • Do I look fat? Probably...Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee lead the nation when it comes to obesity, a new government survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last week, with 30 percent of their residents overweight. The skinniest states? Connecticut, Hawaii, and Colorado.
  • Cook's Natural Science Museum, a popular free attraction in Decatur, will be closed for minor renovations beginning July 20. If all goes according to plans, the Museum will reopen August 2.
  • There will be a midnight opening Friday, August 1st at Barnes & Noble for the release of Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn" . This will be the 4th book in her "Twilight" series that is a best seller teen book.
