Here's some things I found out in Huntsville this week:
Calling all Mommies! If you'd like to get in shape, spend time with your baby and meet other Moms, join a FREE walking program brought to you by Huntsville Hospital and Parkway Place. A "Kickoff Celebration" will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 9 a.m. in the Parkway Place Food Court. Enjoy refreshments, door prizes and an interactive stretching demonstration courtesy of Huntsville Hospital Wellness Center. Be sure to bring your baby and stroller. Please RSVP to Huntsville Hospital Public Relations at (256) 265-8317.
The Benton H. Wilcoxon Ice Complex has a Homeschool Skate every Friday from 10:15 am-12:05 pm for $ 4.50 (includes skates). If you would like to bring a group, please call Becky Sims at (256) 883-3774.
Now through September 30, the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is looking for photographs that showcase the beauty of the Huntsville area and capture images of people enjoying our attractions and special activities or events. The photo contest is open to everyone. Prizes of $750 for first, $500 for second and $250 for third place photos will be awarded. Contest rules on CVB's website.
Are you ready for the fat tax? Beginning in January 2009, Alabama state employees will be required to receive medical screenings for several conditions, including body mass index (BMI). Those who are considered obese -- along with exhibiting other negative health factors -- will have a year to get in shape. The penalty for failure? A $25 increase in their monthly insurance costs.
Finally, a club for us grandmas: Grandmas Club of Huntsville will meet the Third Tuesday of each month at 10 am at Books-a-Million on N. Memorial Pkwy (next to Toys r Us). For more information, call Karen at (256) 851-2772 or greatgrandmashsv@yahoo.com.
September and October brings the Scarecrow Trail back to the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Dozens of wild, wacky, scary and funny crows are once again hiding behind the trees throughout the Garden. This year, scarecrows will be in place on August 30th.
