Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
For the first time in Big Spring Jam’s history, the music festival is awarding two scholarships of $1,000 each. The general public is eligible under this program and invited to apply. Students in pursuit of a degree in music or the entertainment industry will be given special consideration. September 30, 2008 is the deadline for applications. For more info, call (256) 533-1953.
We're on the way up: The Milken Institute/Greenstreet Real Estate Partners Best Performing Cities Index ranks U.S. metropolitan areas by how well they are creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth. Huntsville is ranked #5 for 2008, up from #16 in 2007.
September is National Coupon Month and a reminder that clipping coupons is an easy and fun way to save money. Check out About's Guide to Coupons/Bargains for some great tips and savings.
Mark your calendars: The big Hampton Cove Yard Sale is Sat., October 4th.
Blood donors can support the troops and their communities by giving blood during a special drive Sept. 11 and 12 to honor military members serving overseas. Anyone who donates blood at the LifeSouth Donor Centers at Huntsville Hospital and Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children on those days will be automatically registered to win a care package valued at $150 to be sent to the service member of the winner’s choice. Each donor will receive a patriotic T-shirt, free cholesterol screening and a $20 gift card to a local movie theater. Donors must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and present a photo I.D. For more information, call Huntsville Hospital Public Relations at 265-8317.
All hands on deck: The public is invited to join Trinity United Methodist Church, Interfaith Mission Service, and CASA this weekend as they celebrate service and unity. Projects include: Assembling Flood Buckets for disaster relief, painting wheelchair ramps with CASA, working with Huntsville Community Development Emergency Home Repair, work with the Interfaith Mission Service and IMS FirstStop, painting and repair at Terry Heights Elementary and at the Second Mile Preschool and Neighborhood Store. For questions or more information on how to get involved, contact Rev. Matt Reed at matt.reed@trinityhsv.org or (256) 883-3200.
BBB of North Alabama's "Start With Trust" 2nd Annual Online Auction runs from 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9th until 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 18th. The Auction was designed to help the BBB fulfill their vision: "An ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers can trust each other." Check it out, support local businesses and maybe pick up a bargain.
