Huntsville's Weekend Weather...by James Payton

Wednesday October 22, 2008
On the weather map...A frontal system will be moving through the Tennessee Valley on Friday bringing with it a good chance of some soaking rains Friday into Friday Night. Most areas will see between one-half & one inch of rain. It will also be chilly as some areas may not reach 60 degrees. Rain could be an issue at some of the area high school football games Friday Night...& all fields will be wet. The rain should taper Friday night & the sun will return on Saturday & Sunday with sunny skies & some cool temperatures.

My official Tennessee Valley weekend forecast...

For Friday...Rain. A couple of thunderstorms possible. High 60.
Friday Night...Cloudy & cool with rain mainly early tapering off late. Low 46.
Saturday...Becoming partly cloudy. 1 in 5 chance of a light shower early mainly east of Huntsville. High 63.
Saturday Night...Partly cloudy. Low 44.
Sunday...Partly cloudy. High 67.

Football forecast...

Alabama at Tennessee (Saturday 6:45 pm CT - Knoxville, TN)...It will be mostly cloudy with a shower or two possible during the game. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 50s a kickoff falling into the 40s late. On a side note...if you're staying for the weekend in the Great Smoky Mountains don't be surprised to see a few snowflakes up in the highest elevations east of Knoxville into North Carolina though the weekend.

Auburn at West Virginia (Thursday 7:00 pm CT - Morgantown, WV)...It will be clear & cold with a kickoff temperature in the upper 40s & falling to around 40 in the fourth quarter.

Alabama State vs. Alabama A&M (Saturday 2:30 pm CT - Birmingham, AL)...At The Magic City Classic at historic Legion Field skies will be partly cloudy. Any leftover rain should be gone before kickoff. Temperatures at kickoff should by around 65 degrees.

Last week's weather trivia question...TRUE or FALSE...The outside temperature can be calculated by simply listening to crickets chirping & doing a little math. Believe it or not the answer is true! Just add the number of chirps you hear in 15 seconds & add 37. This will give a good ballpark figure of the actual air temperature.

About how much salt does the U.S. use each year to melt snow on the country's highways?

A. 1 million tons
B. 5 million tons
C. 10 million tons
D. 20 million tons
Have a great weekend everyone!
