Huntsville's Weekend Weather...by James Payton

Thursday November 13, 2008
On the weather map...A strong cold front will cross the Tennessee Valley Friday Night bringing some rain & a few storms late Friday & especially Friday Night. The rain should clear out late Friday night...& all areas should be dry by Saturday afternoon...but it will be much colder & very blustery with a 15-20 mph northwest wind. Sunday will see more sun but still cold conditions.

My official Tennessee Valley weekend forecast...

For Friday...Patchy fog in the morning...otherwise cloudy with a 30% chance of rain & a few storms by late afternoon mainly west of I-65. High 72.
Friday Night...90% chance of rain & thunderstorms all areas. Low 49.
Saturday...A few showers early...otherwise cloudy, windy, & cold. High 49. Wind chills in the upper 30s to near 40.
Saturday Night...Clearing & cold with a light freeze. Low 31.
Sunday...Sunny & continued cold. High 52.

Football forecast...

Mississippi State at Alabama (6:45 pm CT - Tuscaloosa, AL)...It will be cloudy & cold a kickoff with temperatures in the upper 40s at kickoff. There will be some wind around so be sure to bundle up as temperatures will drop during the game.

Georgia at Auburn (11:30 am CT - Auburn, AL)...It will be cloudy with a chance of a shower early in the game. Kickoff temperature will be around 53 with a stiff northwest wind. Again here...bundle up!

Alabama A&M at Jackson State (3:00 pm CT - Jackson, MS)...It will be partly cloudy & windy with a kickoff temperature around 53 degrees & will drop through the game. Once again, bring a coat to this one.

Last week's weather trivia question...A tragic ship sinking occurred on November 9, 1975 due to extreme weather conditions. Which ship was it? The answer was D. The Edmund Fitzgerald. If you've ever heard Gordon Lightfoot's song...you may remember the lines "gales of November remembered" or "when the skies of November turns gloomy". I've posted the song & a video tribute which vividly tells the story of this tragedy & the 29 crew members lost over at my blog...& you can access it at the bottom of this forecast. Be sure to have a tissue with you.

November 15th marks the anniversary of the F4 Airport Road tornado which occurred in 1989. On the day after the tragedy another unusual weather event happened less than 24 hours later. What was it?

A. It snowed
B. It flooded
C. More severe storms & another tornado warning was issued for the same area.
D. An all-time record high for November occurred that afternoon.

Have a great weekend everyone!
