Huntsville Insider Info

Here's what I learned in Huntsville this week:
Are you crazy? Are you still smoking? Today, November 20th, is The Great American Smokeout, which was inaugurated in 1976 to inspire and encourage smokers to quit for a day. Now, 44.2 percent of the 45.3 million Americans who smoke have attempted to quit for at least one day in the past year, and the Great American Smokeout remains a great opportunity to encourage people to commit to making a long-term plan to quit for good. For more information on how to kick the habit, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345.
Support the Marine Toys for Tots Program by attending Shahala's 5th Annual Toys for Tots Hafla this Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the American Legion Post 237 (2900 Drake Avenue in Huntsville). Doors open 6:00 pm, show time 7:30 pm featuring Middle Eastern Dance. Admission charged.
I got a note from Andrew Alden, About's guide to Geology, who's created an Alabama category on his site for people who may be looking for day-trip ideas or a different way to appreciate our area.
Martha Pullen is offering 30% off on all French lace, Victorian embroideries, and Swiss embroideries from November 19-26, 2008 at noon. There are 3 yard minimums on each style ordered. Sale available on "in stock" items only. You can order online (discount won't show until you check out) or call (800-547-4176 ext. 2) to place your order.
Junior Achievement of North Alabama has an urgent need for 12 adult volunteers this Monday, November 24 to assist with "JA in a Day" at Monte Sano Elementary from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Volunteers will present an age-appropriate program in a classroom. The program is already put together and ready to be presented. A brief training is needed before Monday, and it can be conducted at the convenience of the volunteer. If volunteers cannot be found, this event will have to be cancelled. Please call Monica Law at 533-4661 if you can help.
Thanksgiving isn’t here yet, and already HandsOn Greater Huntsville is experiencing an increase in phone calls from people in need as well as an increase in people looking for opportunities to volunteer for the holidays. If you want to help this holiday season, Call 539-7797 or toll free 1-877-567-8723 or email info@volunteerhsv.org.
NASA is looking for the right stuff, or in this case, the right name for the next Mars rover. NASA, in cooperation with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures' movie WALL-E from Pixar
Animation Studios, will conduct a naming contest for its car-sized Mars Science Laboratory rover that is scheduled for launch in 2009. The contest begins Tuesday, Nov. 18, and is open to students 5 to 18 years old who attend a U.S. school and are enrolled in the current academic year. To enter the contest, students will submit essays explaining why their suggested name for the rover should be chosen. Essays must be received by Jan. 25, 2009.
The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year. The City of Huntsville Shuttle Buses will run November 28, 2008 with the exception of one red and blue core loop. These routes will run once an hour. It will also be FREE RIDE Day, so park your car and ride the bus at no charge. The Friday night downtown Circulator will not run. Handi Ride services will run their normal schedule and staff will be available to take appointments.
Wanted: Old cell phones. Operation Green Team makes it easy to properly dispose of old cell phones and needs every phone to come out of hiding to win Keep America Beautiful’s Wipe-Out Wireless Waste national contest. Collected phones are recycled for their precious metals and kept out of our waste stream. Proceeds from phones recycled will benefit the local American Cancer Society chapter. Bring cell phones to Operation Green Team at 308 Fountain Circle or call 53-CLEAN (532-5326) for more information. Deadline to turn in phones is noon on November 26.
