Thanksgiving Weekend Weather...by James Payton

Tuesday November 25, 2008
On the weather map...An unsettled weekend of weather is expected with low pressure waves crossing the state on Friday as well as possibly Sunday. This will trigger a chance of rain & perhaps a storm or two especially Friday with a chance of rain on Sunday & a passing shower possible in-between.

My official Tennessee Valley holiday weekend forecast...

For Thanksgiving...Partly cloudy. High 62.
Thursday night...Becoming cloudy with rain possible after Midnight. Low 46. Chance of rain 50%.
Friday...Cloudy with a 50% chance of showers mainly before mid-afternoon. High 56.
Friday night...Cloudy. Perhaps as shower or two about. Low 36. rain chance 20%.
Saturday...Partly cloudy. 20% chance of a shower. High 57.
Saturday night...Partly cloudy. Low 38.
Sunday...Mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of rain. High 52.

Going shopping early Friday morning for the big Black Friday sales? It will be cloudy with a 50/50 chance it will be raining at your location. Temperatures around 4 am will be in the mid to upper 40s. The good news here is it will be much warmer than last year.

Going to the Iron Bowl Saturday in Tuscaloosa? It will be partly to mostly cloudy with a small chance of a shower or two during the game. Temperatures at 2:30 for kickoff will be in the mid to upper 50s falling into the 40s by the fourth quarter.

Last week's weather trivia question...The highest wind gust ever recorded on Earth was at Mount Washington, NH on April 12, 1934. How high was the wind clocked at? The answer was D. 231 mph. Keep in mind we were looking for the highest wind speed ever recorded. There have been higher wind gusts in large tornadoes...but even the best weather instruments will fail in wind like that.

This week's trivia question...True or false...Tornado warnings are only issued by the National Weather Service when tornadoes are actually spotted on the ground.

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving holiday!
