Huntsville Weekend Weather...by James Payton

Thursday December 4, 2008
On the weather map...After a cold front passes the Tennessee Valley some frier air will push in behind the front. This will lead to a dry yet cold weekend for our area...especially the first half of the weekend.

My official Tennessee Valley weekend forecast...

For Friday...Partly cloudy & cold. High 46.
Friday Night...Fair with a light freeze. Low 27.
Saturday...Partly cloudy & slightly warmer. High 51.
Saturday Night...Fair. Low 29.
Sunday...Partly cloudy. High around 50.

Looking further out into December...Looks like the cold air will hang around for awhile in North Alabama. We'll keep a close eye on this trend as we continue through the middle of the month. Obviously for any shot at a White Christmas the cold air would have to stick around. Should that happen & we get a couple of breaks with a Gulf low (much like what happened Monday) who knows...

If you're heading to Atlanta for he SEC Championship Game...If you're tailgating it will be mostly sunny with an afternoon high in the low to mid 50s. Of course the game itself will be inside the Georgia Dome. Many Alabama fans may remember the basketball tournament in March as a tornado struck the Georgia Dome & downtown Atlanta during the game. Great to say there is no chance of that happening on Saturday. Last week's weather trivia question...True or false...Tornado warnings are only issued by the National Weather Service when tornadoes are actually spotted on the ground. The answer this week was false. Tornado warnings are also issued should a funnel could be spotted by a storm spotter, if rotation is observed on Doppler radar, & even near the eye of a hurricane since the winds are strong & the probability of tornadoes near the eye are quite high. This week's weather trivia question...What is the all-time official record low temperature ever recorded in Huntsville on Christmas morning?

A. 7 degrees
B. 4 degrees
C. 1 degree
D. -1 degree

Have a great weekend everyone!
