New Year's Weekend Weather...by James Payton

Wednesday December 31, 2008
On the weather map...Several waves of low pressure will cross the area through the weekend. This will lead to periods of rain...but there will be some sunshine through the period. Thursday & Saturday are looking to be the best days of the weekend...& an all-day rain is not expected on any day. A stronger front will approach by the end of the weekend...which will lead to an unsettled start to the new work week.

My official Tennessee Valley weekend forecast...

For New Year's Day...Sunny & cool. High 53.
Thursday Night...Becoming cloudy. Showers moving in late. Low 37.
Friday...Cloudy with a few showers early. Partial clearing by afternoon. High 50.
Friday Night...Fair & chilly. Low 32.
Saturday...Sunny & warmer. High 56.
Saturday Night...Becoming cloudy with rain moving in late. A storm is possible. Low 42.
Sunday...Cloudy with a good chance of showers & perhaps a storm. High 52.

Last week's weather trivia question...What is the coldest low temperature on New Year's Day on record in Huntsville? The answer was D. 7 degrees. The temperature has been reached more than once...but last occurred in 1977. This was somewhat of a trick question. If you recall the record low for Christmas was one degree below zero. Thus...it usually would be safe to assume the record low deeper into winter would be colder. Not the case on this one!

This week's trivia question...What is the warmest New Year's Day on record in Huntsville?

A. 72 degrees
B. 75 degrees
C. 79 degrees
D. 82 degrees

Have a very happy New Year everyone!
