Here's what I learned in Huntsville this week:

Because of all the bad weather and rain we've had this December, The Botanical Garden has extended Galaxy of Lights until January 3rd from 5:30-9:00 pm nightly; $15 per car up to 10 people. $3 per person over 10 in a vehicle. The Whole Backstage Theatre in Guntersville is holding auditions for "THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH" January 22, 23 at 6:30 pm and January 24 at 2:00 pm. Production dates are May 1-9. For more info, call (256) 582-SHOW.
The Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights Trail was recently named one of Frommer’s Top 12 Destinations in the World for 2009. Only two other U.S. destinations were included on the list published in the Dec.-Jan. issue of the international travel guide: Washington, D.C. and Lassen Volcanic National Park, California.
What a new movie theater experience...how about live sports in 3D? Rave Motion Pictures has two events for you: January 8 BCS College Football Championship Game
featuring the Florida Gators & the Oklahoma Sooners (7 pm) and February 14 NBA All Star Saturday Night Live featuring the 3 Point, Slam Dunk & Skills Contests (7 pm). Ticket prices for the BCS Bowl Game range from $20 to $25 and for the NBA Event range from $15 to $20. Limited seating.
Winner of every major award including the Tony and the Pulitzer, Theatre Huntsville presents "Fences" by August Wilson at the VBC Playhouse. Performances are January 16-17 & 22-24 at 7:30 pm and January 18 & 24, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Adults $15, Seniors/Students/Active Military $13. For more info, call (256) 536-0807. "Fences" deals with mature themes and is recommended for teens and adults.
If you have battled cancer and now your goal is to attend college, then let the American Cancer Society help. The organization offers college scholarships to young cancer survivors. This year's deadline to apply is February 1, 2009. For more information, call 1-800-ACS-2345.
Olde Towne Brewery is back up and running. They are releasing new beers all the time and wrote to say that anything happening associated with beer in Huntsville typically happens at The Nook on Bob Wallace Avenue. Check their website for beer tastings and the latest news.
