Huntsville Insider Info

Thursday January 8, 2009
Here's what I learned in Huntsville this week:
  • If you like being outdoors, have you ever thought about volunteering at the Botanical Garden? If so, you should attend an information meeting to be held on Tuesday, January 13th at 9:30 in the Boeing Education Classroom. For more info, call Bernadette Williams at (256) 830-4447 x238.
  • Parents, here's some good news: Kids Eat Free every Sunday night at Ketchup in Bridge Street.
  • Looking for something to do? The Huntsville Museum of Art is offering Winter 2009 art classes for children, teens, and adults. Sign up now while space is available. For more info, call (256) 535-4350 ext. 222.
  • Do you speak another language? HandsOn Greater Huntsville needs bilingual volunteers to assist local residents who do not speak English well. As part of the Volunteer Language Bank, volunteers may interpret at doctors appointments and parent teacher conferences. For more information, call (256) 539-7797 or toll free 1-877-567-8723.
  • Tickets are on sale now for the March 1st Olivia Newton John concert at VBC. TicketsFirst Presale Offer begins Jan. 7th at 10:00 am and ends Jan. 11th at 11:59 pm. Use the password OLIVIA and purchase your tickets before they go on sale to the public on Jan. 12th. Tickets available at the VBC Box Office, www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 800-277-1700 and all Ticketmaster outlets.
  • Do you enjoy biking? Then you might want to join this group for Vintage and Cruiser Bicycle Rides held the last Sunday of the month, usually at 2 pm. This is a Free, family friendly, social event and conversationally slow bike ride through the downtown Huntsville area, often ending with a stop at a local coffee shop. All bicycles welcome. For more info, call (256) 536-0222.
  • Parents, need a night out? No excuse for not having a date night...Sci-Quest is offering Parents Night Out every third Friday of each month (except for March due to spring break). Children will enjoy dinner sponsored by Dominos, age-appropriate science activities, a viewing in Sci-Quest theater and time with Sci-Quest's hands-on exhibits. For ages 4-12 years of age. For more info or to register, call (256) 837-0606.
  • Once again, dogs are welcome at the Botanical Garden from January 17 through February. Bring a Frisbee, stick, ball or special toy for your pet to enjoy while playing in the “no leash zone” located in the back of the Garden. Free to members and regular Garden admission for non-members. Dog visitors cost only $1 per visit, or you can buy a Paws Pass membership for only $10 for unlimited admission for you canine friend. For more info on dog activities and workshops, call (256) 830-4447.
  • Interior Marketplace on Highway 431 South has two new shops: Indigo Boutique and The Little House Purse Shop. Stop by and check them out.
