9-1-1 Festival This Weekend

Wednesday June 10, 2009
HALEYVILLE--In 1968, the city of Haleyville made history when Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite placed the first 911 emergency call from City Hall to U.S. Representative Tom Bevill at the city’s police station. Each year, Haleyville celebrates its role in history with the annual 9-1-1 Festival honoring its police, fire, rescue, and emergency personnel.

The 11th annual 9-1-1 Festival kicks off on Friday, June 12 at approximately 9:30 p.m. with a street dance in front of Dixie Theater. The festivities continue on Saturday, June 13, with a parade at 10 a.m. Parade route will start on 19th Street next to City Hall, to Alabama Avenue, right on 21st Street, right on 10th Avenue, and left on 20th Street to City Hall. Throughout the day, there will be face painting, children’s activities and rides, an arts and crafts show, car show, the Haleyville Idol Contest, and new for this year is a tractor show.

The Haleyville Rotary Club annual BBQ Cook-off also coincides with the 9-1-1 Festival. The cook-off will be held in the parking lot behind McDonald’s and for more information, contact Bruce Eddy at 205.486.9561.

All activities are held in downtown Haleyville and admission is free. For general information or to register for the arts and crafts show, contact City Hall at 205.486.3121. For information on the Idol Contest, call 205.486.6491. Registration for the car show is available by calling 205.486.0893.
