Huntsville Insider Info
Thursday July 9, 2009
Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
- We've got our own local ghost walk led by Jacque Reeves, but according to USA Today, the Southwest Alabama Regional Tourism and Film Office is working to establish a ghost trail stretching through the 18 counties that make a swath through the middle of the state starting this summer.
- Note: Due to the Downtown Summerfest 2009, the Huntsville Ghost Walk has been canceled for Saturday, July 11, 2009. There will be a walk on Saturday, July 18, and every Saturday through the month of October.
- Free Mocha at McDonald's every Monday for the next month. Click on free mocha Mondays--limit one 8 oz. mocha or 7 oz iced mocha per visit between 7 am-7 pm on July 13, 20, 27, and Aug 3.
- On Saturday, July 11, 2009, enjoy Downtown Summerfest, Huntsville's FIRST downtown block party! Several streets in the downtown area will be closed off and at 4:00pm the party will begin. Booked acts for this inaugural event include Sister Hazel, Cowboy Mouth, Gringo Star, & Rob Aldridge. In addition, local vendors will provide food, non-alcoholic, and alcoholic beverages for attendees to purchase.
- Who won Ketchup's Hot Dog Eating Contest on the 4th of July? Josh "The Tazer" Breaux ate 9 hot dogs (with buns!) in 10 minutes.
- The Songwriters' Showcase will be Friday, July 10th at 6:30 pm in the Von Braun Center Playhouse. Don't miss your chance to meet great songwriters behind songs such as "Little Miracle", "Stand UP", "Pause" and "I've Got a Feelin". These hits were written by Melanie Dekker, Rickey Ray and American Idol Finalist Diana DeGarmo and Jim Parker. All seats are reserved for $20.
- Sesame Street Live: "Elmo’s Green Thumb" is coming to the Von Braun Center Arena, September 8 & 9. Tickets on sale now. Use code SEWW.
- Wee Care at Sci-Quest is an educational program specially designed for pre-school children. The next program is July 23 from 10:00 am-11:30 am and will feature a representative from Search and Rescue Dogs, and will focus on medical safety. Free with general admission to the museum.
- August 1st is the 101st Anniversary of the DeKalb County Fiddlers’ Convention. Come out and join in the “Jam Sessions”, greet old friends, meet new ones, “Celebrate the Heritage” and support Arts in Education. For more information, Contact the Big Wills Arts Council at 256-845-2224.
- KidzEyes.com is an online survey panel where kids can tell the companies that make products and services for them how they look through kids' eyes and be rewarded for it. The KidzEyes panel is an online community of kids aged 6-12.
- Saturday, July 11th, at 7:30 pm Rocket City United takes on Lynch's FC, the reigning US Open Cup Region III Champions. It's Madison Night, where Madison residents and City of Madison Chamber of Commerce members receive $3 off the normal ticket price with I.D.
