Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
  • Huntsville is getting noticed nationally again...We're on a list from US News & World Report of the Top 10 Best Places for Tech Jobs. "Huntsville boasts the nation's second-largest tech and research park, Cummings Research Park, which houses 225 companies and 23,000 employees." Go, Huntsville!
  • Across the Pond is offering Free Saturday Workshops this fall at 11 am & 2 pm, which are open to everyone. Subjects include: Preparing Your Landscape for Autumn, Living Green in the Garden, Landscape Design Basics, Creating Outdoor Living Spaces, Building Retaining Walls and Pavers, Attracting Birds and Nature To Your Garden, Pond Building Basics, and Preparing Your Pond and Fountain for Cold Weather.   • Peace Valley Foundation is hosting the 4th Annual Dialogue Dinner titled "Who is my neighbor?" on October 15th. To add to the occasion, they are sponsoring an essay contest for all middle school & high school students with the same theme. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winning students and their assisting teachers will each receive $150, $125, and $100 cash prizes, respectively. In addition, 4th and 5th place holders will receive $50 gift cards. For more info, call (256) 654-4439.
  • Now I feel safer: "Out of the state's four largest cities, Huntsville boasts the lowest murder rate and one of the lowest rates of property crime, according to an annual FBI crime report released Monday."
  • Enjoy a late summer stroll through the Botanical Garden and learn the best plants of the season this Saturday, Sept. 19th from 10-11:30 am. Join Landscape Architect, Carol Lambdin, as you discover what is in bloom or is creating excitement in The Garden. This walk will focus on ornamental grasses, late season annuals and perennials. Members $15, Non-members $20.
  • Alabama Civil Rights Trail featured in USA TODAY as an ideal fall road trip. It's not that far from us...so why don't you take a day trip and explore it? Send me pictures!
  • The Alabama Department of Public Health announces a decline in Alabama’s infant mortality rate in 2008, with a rate of 9.5 deaths per 1,000 live births and a total of 612 infant deaths. Unfortunately, the adequacy of prenatal care in Alabama fell to its lowest level in more than a decade. Data from the department’s Center for Health Statistics show that only 74.2 percent of all live births were to women with adequate prenatal care...Twelve percent of Alabama mothers smoked during pregnancy in 2008. The infants born to nonsmoking mothers had an 8.9 rate of infant mortality versus a 13.2 rate for infants born to mothers who smoked.
  • NASA is inviting eligible educational institutions, museums and other organizations to begin registering to screen potential space shuttle artifacts. More information about the types of artifacts that may be available is included in a brochure, "Space Shuttle Program Artifacts."
  • Monaco Pictures has tickets are on sale now for the midnight screenings of Summit Entertainment's highly anticipated "New Moon" on Thursday, November 19, 2009. This is the second movie in the progression of The Twilight Saga.
