Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
- Junior Achievement of North Alabama has a new JA Job Shadow Online program. Now you can introduce students to careers through one-day, on-site orientations. It's an authentic work-world experience for the students ... enhanced with student preparation and follow-up activities. For more info, call (256) 533-4661.
- It just keeps on making news: The tumultuous state of gambling in Alabama may see a precedent set in court. This passing Tuesday, a judge ruled that the Madison County bingo fiasco will not apply to other bingo schemes around the state.
- Did you ever think you'd live to see the day that the South Parkway overpass would be completed? Well, hold on...the city of Huntsville is saying now that it will be finish in January 2010. In fact, videos detailing work being done on Huntsville's most asked about construction projects are already airing on Huntsville 1, the City's government television channel, and will now be available online at hsvcity.com/projectvideos/.
- The Greater Huntsville Humane Society will present "Rock Your Paws", a live musical event and Walk on Saturday, October 10 from 10 am to 4 pm in Big Spring Park. For more info, call (256) 755-2065.
- This sounds interesting: Wild Birds Unlimited will present a show on Close Encounters with Birds of Prey at the Huntsville Botanical Garden on October 9 at the Boeing-Toyota Amphitheatre with shows at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Representatives from Save Our American Raptors in Chattanooga are bringing three types of owls, a Bald Eagle, a Red-Tailed Hawk, an American Kestrel, a Harris's Hawk and a Black Vulture. Free with membership or paid admission to Garden. For more info, call (256) 430-3572, ext 241.
- Huntsville independent film director Jurian Isabelle's hour-long drama Veils of Color, shot in and around Madison County including the city of Huntsville and in Union Grove, has been selected for the International Black Film Festival of Nashville on Oct. 2nd.
- If you have kids, then you might be interested in Kid's Market, a 2 week sale of gently used clothing, toys and anything else baby & kid related going on now through October 10th in the old Linens & Things building on University across from Madison Square Mall. For more info, call (256) 883-8899.
- Have questions about the H1N1 flu? The Alabama Department of Public Health has a toll-free influenza information hotline for the public at 877-377-7285 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday for information and referrals.
- The Ketchup Restaurant located in Bridge Street Town Centre has closed and the space has been leased to a BBQ restaurant which should open by the end of November.
