Huntsville Insider Info
Wednesday October 21, 2009
Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
- PLAY THE GAME, starring Andy Griffith and Doris Roberts, is a romantic comedy specifically targeted toward boomers and seniors. It will be playing at the Carmike 10 on Old Monrovia Road starting October 30th.
- Trinity United Methodist Church invites everyone to their Fall Festival on Sunday, October 25th from 4-6 pm: Enjoy Trunk or Treat in the front parking lot-wear your favorite costume, Live Band Music & BBQ dinner, Costume Party for Pets, Board Games for Adults inside, Storytelling and Stamps for children, Inflatables and Carnival Games open (Gym and Wesley Hall), Cake & , Coke Walk in Wesley Hall, and Popcorn and Candy Stand.
- Huntsville International Airport is really trying to lower airline tickets. Be sure to sign the "we want low fares" petition.
- New "green" building plans include a $400,000 interpretive center for children at Hays Nature Preserve, an environmentalists' dream, featuring recycled steel beams, rain gardens to collect and purify stormwater and possibly a plant-covered roof.
- Nobel Prize-winning physicist Dr. David Gross will speak on the future of fundamental physics at Alabama A&M University Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the James L. Dawson Cooperative Extension Building on campus. The public is invited.
- For the eighth consecutive year, Huntsville Hospital has been awarded National Research Corporation's Consumer Choice Award. The hospital was one of only five hospitals in Alabama and the only one in north Alabama this year to receive this recognition.
- If you want to get away and get a smile on your face, come to "He Said, She Said" on Saturday, October 24, 2009 presented by Huntsville Community Chorus Association's Symphonic Chorus, The Chamber Chorale, and Special Guests - The Sparkman High School Concert Choir. The concert will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church and will begin at 7:30 pm. For tickets or more info, call (256) 533-6606.
- The Fifth Annual Rocket City Short Film Festival is Friday, Oct. 23 at 8 pm. The festival will be in the 2nd floor theater of the Flying Monkey Arts Center at the Historic Lowe Mill. Tickets are still only $5.
- An interactive map on the Alabama Tourism Department's website allows visitors to see the predicted fall color change for each weekend this fall. The map, a list of recommended viewing sites and a Circle of Color driving route are all available.
- Scores are in for eighth grade students in math. Alabama is still near the bottom in a nationwide ranking, with only Mississippi and the District of Columbia scoring lower. Come on, Alabama--let's do better! We know you're better than that.
