Here's some things I learned in Huntsville this week:
- Online shopping is hassle-free and now it's cheaper than ever. Free Shipping Day is today, Thursday, December 17th. 719 participating merchants are offering free shipping with delivery by Christmas Eve. With all the whisperings about possible snow this next week, I thought I'd ask about it. With James Payton's help and according to the National Weather Service in Huntsville...we've never had a classic White Christmas since records have been kept here, dating back to the late 1800s. The last time snow has been on the ground on Christmas morning after a snow from a previous day here was 1963.
- One man uses his Christmas lights to help our community. Through Dec. 23, American Red Cross volunteers or will stand in Fred Holland's yard on Woodmont Avenue in Blossomwood and educate people on fire prevention and safety by handing out pamplets. They're also accepting donations.
- On Sunday, December 20th the staff of 801 Franklin will serve a holiday lunch to the women and children housed in the Downtown Rescue Mission/Sapp shelter. They are diligently trying to get the women and children Wal-Mart Gift Cards. Most of the women have no source of income, so this small gesture on our part will help greatly. If you or your company would like to help us in this endeavor, you may add an extra amount to your guest check or email monty@801franklin.com.
- Kids To Love has a lot going on during the holiday season and could use your help. nyone interested in providing Christmas for a foster child or volunteering to wrap gifts at Bridge Street can email kidstolovefoundation@yahoo.com.
- About 2,400 of the 4,651 government positions coming to Redstone Arsenal and Huntsville under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure decision have already moved here, and 2,000 have been filled, according to Army Col. Robert Pastorelli, Redstone's garrison commander.
- MercyMe is currently offering a FREE "10 Live" Live Album Download as a Christmas present when you sign up for their newsletter. As soon as their website appears, the download will come up.
- Love Country Music? Then you might want to see Willie Nelson on January 19th at 7:30 pm at the Von Braun Center Concert Hall. All seats are reserved for only $51.50 & $41. Tickets available through www.ticketmaster.com, by phone 800-745-3000, all Ticketmaster outlets, and the VBC Box Office.
