Here's some of the things I learned in Huntsville this week:
- Parkway Place, 2801 Memorial Parkway SW, has some new stores coming to its mall: Charming Charlie (downstairs by Brookstone & Williams Sonoma), Nori Japan (in the Food Court, and Massage Therapy (across from Pottery Barn) plus Brand New Play Area with space-theme, located on the upper level near Belk. Children can walk on the moon, crawl on planets, slide down a meteor and ride a Saturn V while Moms relax on our comfortable soft seating. Check these out.
- From the ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH: Pertussis is a highly contagious and sometimes fatal bacterial disease which has increased alarmingly in the past decade. To help provide protection, all students 11 and older entering the sixth grade in Alabama schools this school year must have a tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine. For more information contact the Immunization Division at 1-800-469-4599.
- Carol Highsmith, who has grown a reputation as "America's photographer," is spending 100 days in Alabama capturing life in 2010 for the George F. Landegger Alabama Library of Congress Collection. "Alabama has it all: the beaches, the history, more historic buildings than I have ever seen in any other state, and wonderful people. It is one amazing state," Highsmith said.
- I got this from NASA: Scientists have found evidence that a giant black hole has been jerked around twice, causing its spin axis to point in a different direction from before. This discovery, made with new data from NASA's Chandra X- ray Observatory, might explain several mysterious-looking objects found throughout the Universe.
- Bimini Road will play all the Coffee Tree, , 7900 Bailey Cove Rd SE, Huntsville at 7:00 pm on Friday night, July 23. They'll be playing that sweet psycho-jive music, but with a definite folky twist: plus pulling a few out of the tune book that they haven't visited in a while, plus a few new tunes and some old favorites. Admission is free. For more info, call (256) 880-6464.
- The Arc of Madison County has moved up to #33 in the rankings to win $250,000 in the Pepsi Refresh project. They are now at a point where every vote counts. They have to keep the momentum going in this community, and can only do so with your help. For more info, call (256) 539-2266.
- Finally some good news for Huntsville: Raytheon is building a new 70,000-square-foot, $75 million missile production facility in Huntsville, Ala. Tucson was a finalist, but didn't have what Raytheon needed and Arizona didn't give what Alabama did. Read more about what Tucson is saying about OUR great victory!
- Tickets are On-Sale Now for the Backyard BBQ by Outback Steakhouse at the Botanical Garden's Pavilion, Thursday, July 29 from 5:30 - 7:00 pm.
