2004 Huntsville Historic Homes Tour

Stroll Through Alabama's Largest Antebellum District

By Jean Brandau, About.com

Huntsville is home to the largest selection of Antebellum Homes in Alabama. A few times each year, different local organizations sponsor fundraiser that allow the general public to have access to some of the most unusual and beautiful homes in the city limits.

The annual Spring Historic Homes Tour is sponsored by the Huntsville Pilgrimage Association and features five homes and two gardens from the Twickenham, Old Town, and Five Points districts, as well as the ornate century-old Temple B'nai Sholom.

The Historic Homes Tour will take place on Saturday, May 1, 2004 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available at Lawren's, Brooks & Collier, The Greenery, Weeden House, Parisians, Railroad Station Antique Mall, Shaver's Bookstore, Harrison Brothers Hardware, and Magnolia Market Place. In Decatur at Sam, Frank & Moore; in Athens at Cluxton's Jewelers and in Fayetteville at The Tigress and the Chamber of Commerce.

The Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll is Sunday, May 2, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and is free to the public (donations accepted and appreciated). "Voices from the Past" features over sixty local people who share the rich history of the original Maple Hill Cemetery "residents"--including five Alabama governors, the first Secretary of War for the Confederacy, veterans and casualties from the American Revolution up to World War II plus other local heroes and colorful characters.
