- Most available jobs are not posted in any newspaper or on any job web site. They are posted on the individual companies' web sites. So be sure and check the "career opportunities" on local companies' websites for some job openings that are never posted anywhere else.
- Some managers don't go through Personnel and the available job openings are just in the office of the hiring managers. So, if you know a hiring manager, you should call and ask them if they have any job openings.
- The next best chance for finding a job is to do a lot of research. Go to all the companies' websites you can find who might have a job opening in your field.
- A very long list of small businesses is at http://pro-net.sba.gov. This is the Small Business Administration website and contains database search by state, a list of opportunities and resources plus a subcontractor job openings.
- Limit your search to companies in the county where you wish to work, then pick potential companies and go to their web sites to search for jobs.
- For jobs at Redstone Arsenal, go to http://cpol.army.mil. It is the Army-wide site used to submit resumes; also, candidates can look for or submit for only those jobs, in the locations for which they are interested.
- http://www.usajobs.opm.gov is the government-wide site that lists all jobs, not just Army. On this site an applicant can set up to receive email for jobs they are interested in.
- The Huntsville library has a book that lists Chamber of Commerce members. This will include most of the large companies in the Huntsville area. If you know of some large companies who do not belong to the Chamber, just go to their web sites. Most companies have their website listed as "theirname.com"

Another way to find job openings is to look at all the internet sites you can find that specialize in job openings and work opportunities. Some internet sites you should check are:
-
Only a small portion of the available jobs in the minds of all the hiring managers or on their companies' web sites make it to one of these sites, so it's a good idea to call and ask if you really want to work for a particular company.

Don't forget to look in the local newspaper. Sometimes, an ad will appear in the newspaper that should also be on www.al.com. It is usually easier to find it in the newspaper. Most people start their job search with the newspaper, but as most professional career counselors will tell you, over 90% of jobs are never listed in the newspaper. Don't be lazy and just wait for Sunday's paper when you are job hunting. Try as many ways as you can and you are more likely to find success and the perfect job for you.
If you have some job hunting skills that you have learned or dealt with the hard way, please send them to me to be added to this piece on Job Hunting Tips. You can write me at huntsville.guide@about.com .
Happy job hunting!
