Huntsville Resident Crowned Mrs. America 2000

Stacie Willis Takes Crown

By , About.com Guide

Stacie Willis, 32, of Huntsville is not your ordinary physician's wife and mother of two. She was just named winner of the Mrs. America title. Since 1977, Mrs. America contestants have been urged to voice their opinions on marriage and important issues of the day. Stacie believes strongly in the need to combat school violence, the homeless, and intercity problems. After talking to teachers and guidance counselors, she is hoping that she can use her position as Mrs. America to promote programs that address these issues.

Stacie began her pageant career as a sophomore in high school when she won the 1984 Miss Sheffield competition. She decided to enter the Mrs. Alabama competition in 1997 so that her daughter would know that stay-at-home moms can have accomplishments, achieve goals, and fulfill dreams. She was first runner-up that year. Although she didn't compete in 1998, her neighbor, Lydia Cole asked for her advice and entered, winning the title of Mrs. Alabama 1998 and going on to compete in the Mrs. America competition. The next year Stacie decided to enter Mrs. Alabama again and asked for Lydia's advice and counsel. Stacie said it was a special thrill for her to compete for Mrs. Alabama in 1999, win and then be crowned by her good friend.

As Mrs. Alabama 1999, Stacie went to Hawaii in September and competed in the Mrs. America Pageant. She was first runner-up, which was almost a relieve because if she'd won she would have been required to spend three weeks in Jerusalem during the busy holiday season to compete in the Mrs. World Pageant. However, Starla Stanley of Utah, the reigning Mrs. America competed and won. She became Mrs. World, making 1st runner-up, Stacie Willis of Huntsville, the NEW Mrs. America 2000.

The coming year promises to be a busy one for Stacie with many public appearances and promotions for the Mrs. America Pageant. She will also be doing charity work for the pageant and for herself with some local organizations. She hopes to also be an ambassador for Huntsville, telling others why she loves this hometown of hers. When recently asked what city she'd live in if she had her choice, she quickly replied, "I'd live right here in Huntsville. It's a great place to live with lots of opportunities. The mountains and the valleys are just beautiful. We're only 2 hours away from 3 major cities; we're only 5 or 6 hours from the beach or the mountains, and the terrain here is lovely. And I enjoy living in the Bible Belt."
