Submit a Feature to the Huntsville Site at About

By , About.com Guide

From time to time visitors to the Huntsville site want to share their expertise on certain topics with other people who live in Alabama or are interested in Alabama. Below you'll find out how to submit an article. When you decide to submit an article for consideration, please use this form.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: As long as it takes!

Here's How:

  1. Determine that you have an interest in writing on a topic that will be relevant to people living in Alabama, visiting Alabama, or those considering moving to Alabama.
  2. Make sure your topic is suitable for all ages. Remember--the About Huntsville site is a family friendly site.
  3. It is OK if you have a special interest in your topic, as long as the article is not a commercial for you or your business.
  4. An article is usually best if it is between 500 and 800 words. If it is longer, it must be able to be broken down into a few 300 or 400-word distinguishable sections.
  5. An article should help the reader easily find out "what they need to know." Bullet points are good, or lists. Readers on the Internet often want the information quickly and then they move on.
  6. The content of a feature should be evergreen. In other words, it doesn't become outdated. For example, a feature about pool safety would be good; one about a pool safety seminar on May 1st would not.
  7. Articles are accepted solely at my discretion. I also may edit the articles.
  8. If an article submission is accepted, I will include an introductory sentence so that visitors know who authored the feature.
  9. I allow a short bio and personal or company promotion with links and/or contact information at the end of the feature (this is your commercial).
  10. I will provide the final edited version for your review. If you agree with any changes that might have been made, I will send the article live on the About Huntsville site and send you the URL.
  11. The article will be promoted on the About Huntsville main page for between 1 and 3 weeks. After that, it will remain on the site indefinitely and can be found by visitors at the URL that I provided.

Tips:

  1. Some people who don't already have an article written like to submit a brief outline or bullet points of an idea, just to make sure it is a topic that I can use. I welcome this. Just use the link below to send me an email.
  2. If you think you own a photo or graphic that would go well with the feature, let me know when you submit the article.
  3. Once you are ready to submit a feature, you must submit it electronically. You can find a link to the electronic form below.
