Theatre Review: "Always...Patsy Cline"

The Renaissance Theatre Showcases Patsy Cline Songs

By , About.com Guide

The Renaissance Theatre stage is swinging as they showcase the Ted Swindley show about Patsy Cline and her relationship with one devoted fan. This is an intimate look at the woman behind the legend, an insider’s story as only a true friend could tell it. This production highlights 19 of Patsy's popular country songs. If you like songs like "Crazy," "She's Got You," "Back in Baby's Arms," "Walking After Midnight," "I Fall To Pieces," and "Your Cheating Heart," you're going to love this show.

Newcomer Cathy Roark does a great job singing and acting in her second stage production. She was first seen in the Renaissance Theatre's "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" as Doatsy Mae. Taking a role in a two-woman show is a gutsy move on Roark's part and she has risen to the challenge. Sound problems were plaguing the theatre the night I went to rehearsal, but director Bob Baker assured me that that would be cleared up by Opening Night. Despite technical difficulties, it was a treat to see and hear Miss Patsy Cline come alive onstage. And, no, if you're wondering as I did, this is not one of the women who are in the area that do Patsy Cline impersonations. This is a whole new fresh look at the star.

The only other person "onstage" in this production is veteran actor Sherri Ryan as Louise, a Texas fan who gets to meet Patsy when she comes to town for a concert and ends up befriending her and becoming a lifelong correspondent. Ryan was last seen as Miss Mona in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." She is adorable as a fanatic fan whose dream comes true of meeting her idol. She bubbles with enthusiasm, life, fun and excitement. Her antics are funny and endearing. She embodies the word "fan" with a Capital F.

This isn't really a two-woman show. There's a band onstage as well with Music Director David Giambrone. Back-up singers include W. Scott Cancel, Ryan Morris and Trey Johnson. And, of course, the crew and technicians that always work behind the scenes to put on any production outnumber the people seen onstage.

This show is licensed by the family and estate of Patsy Cline. It is full of constant action and song and sure to become one of your favorite theatre evenings. Tickets are selling out fast...so don't hesitate to get your reservation in by calling 256-536-3117 or 256-536-3434. "Always...Patsy Cline" is onstage February 6-8 and 12-14. Dinner Theatre on February 13 and 14 will make a great Valentine's Day gift.
