Samuel Williamson Balch built this house in 1887 as a two-room dogtrot log house.  Balch owned a 160-acre farm, sawmill, general store, and served as postmaster of Nebo, Alabama.  In 1898, he enclosed the breezeway, added a half story to the upstairs loft, built a frame kitchen, post office, and dining room in the rear, and covered the exterior with clapboard siding and a shiny new tin roof.  With all of these improvements, the house now had three bedrooms. The stairway in the central hall leads to the boys’ room, while the one in the parents’ bedroom leads to the girls’ room.  Here, mother and father could keep a watchful eye on the comings and goings of their young ladies.
