| Part 5: Thurston-Stephenson Home | |||||||||||||
Newspaper printer John Lloyd built this two-story Greek Revival house in 1857 that survives as the oldest frame house in the Old Town Historic District. The house was in the Thurston and Dyer families from the 1860's until William Spragins bought it in 1949. It functioned as a men's boarding house until Mr. and Mrs. William Rutledge acquired it in 1979 and began a lengthy restoration which rescued the house. In 2000, the Stephensons converted the den into a handsome library with Brazilian cherry paneling, installed a master suite upstairs and uncovered three original fireplaces.
Candy Stephenson's five-year stay in Europe added a trove of antiques to her collection that includes an American Shaker secretary. They added two porches to the rear that overlook a formal English garden.
