| Part 1: Hollowell-Nola Home | |||||||||||||
The first Saturday in May is always a treat for Huntsville residents and visitors. The Huntsville Pilgrimage Association sponsors the annual historic homes tour on Saturday where private homes are open to the public. On Sunday of the same weekend, the association hosts the annual Cemetery Stroll in Maple Hill Cemetery. These two events are worth the wait each year for those who are students of architecture or Huntsville history. In 2004, there are five homes, one church and two private gardens on the tour.
William Hollowell built this Alabama Greek Revival House in 1835. Inviting double stairs welcome visitors into this beautiful home, furnished with American neoclassical furniture and decorative arts from the years 1835 to 1850. This charming home features a raised English basement and dramatic floor-to-ceiling parlor windows. Visitors enter the Ionic portico to find themselves transported back in time to a by-gone era of class and sophistication. Original moldings, doors, mantels, flooring and hardware have been carefully restored to the original early nineteenth century fashion by the present owner, architect Frank Nola. Mr. Nola's expertise in restoration is evident in many of the homes on the 2004 tour.
