| Part 2: Hentz-Pollard Home | |||||||||||||
The first Saturday in May is always a treat for Huntsville residents and visitors. The Huntsville Pilgrimage Association sponsors the annual historic homes tour on Saturday where private homes are open to the public. On Sunday of the same weekend, the association hosts the annual Cemetery Stroll in Maple Hill Cemetery. These two events are worth the wait each year for those who are students of architecture or Huntsville history. In 2004, there are five homes, one church and two private gardens on the tour.
This Italianate-style home was originally built in 1872 on Groove Street. Andrew Hentz was a carriage manufacturer who apparently did well for himself. This home features poplar woodwork and pine floors and before it was modernized, it was an excellent example of an old-time dogtrot. Joseph Hinds, a diplomat and former Minister to Brazil, lived in this home in the early 1880's. His daughter Grace became Lady Curzon upon her marriage to George Curzon, the Viceroy of India. The present owner is Mrs. Anne Pollard. A sunroom has been added, along with the master bedroom and bath. The guest bedroom features antique furnishing brought from historic Limestone County community of Mooresville. The smokehouse has been converted into a playhouse. A flower room and formal garden complete this home which was saved from the progress of modern urban renewal when it was moved to it present location on Steele Street in 1980.
