The first Saturday in May is always a treat for Huntsville residents and visitors.  The Huntsville Pilgrimage Association sponsors the annual historic homes tour on Saturday where private homes are open to the public.  On Sunday of the same weekend, the association hosts the annual Cemetery Stroll in Maple Hill Cemetery.  These two events are worth the wait each year for those who are students of architecture or Huntsville history.  In 2004, there are five homes, one church and two private gardens on the tour.

804 Ward Avenue

This c. 1900 home was part of the East Huntsville Addition.  The appealing cottage has a high pitched roof with three wide dormers and long slender windows.  The transom above the wood and beveled glass front door opens to allow the aroma of oven-baked delicacies to be appreciated by passers-by, and yet invites the sultry night sounds of crickets and cicadas inside.

Because of multiple renovations over the years, this home retains the best of several architectural periods.  The wrap-around L-shaped porch is reminiscent of days gone by, when neighbors called to each other from their rocking chairs, sharing news and greetings.

The present owner, Mrs. Kerri Riley, has had the ceilings raised and interior walls moved for comfortable living.  Lovely antiques adorn this home in the Five Points District.
