| Part 5: Davis-Hunter Home | |||||||||||||
The first Saturday in May is always a treat for Huntsville residents and visitors. The Huntsville Pilgrimage Association sponsors the annual historic homes tour on Saturday where private homes are open to the public. On Sunday of the same weekend, the association hosts the annual Cemetery Stroll in Maple Hill Cemetery. These two events are worth the wait each year for those who are students of architecture or Huntsville history. In 2004, there are five homes, one church and two private gardens on the tour.
This excellent example of Victorian Queen Anne architecture was built in 1889. This graceful home features a slender front gable and broad front porch. The irregular rooflines feature angled bays, hips and cross gables, typical of the Victorian era. The post-Civil War trend toward asymmetry is beautifully reflected in this home located in the Twickenham Historic District. This Randolph Street home was lovingly renovated in 2002, bringing back the original walls, ceilings and floors, along with the addition of a state-of-the art kitchen. Michele and Ross Hunter own this inviting 5-bedroom residence, and have decorated it throughout with Southern art.
