| Part 7: Erkskine-McCown Garden | |||||||||||||
The first Saturday in May is always a treat for Huntsville residents and visitors. The Huntsville Pilgrimage Association sponsors the annual historic homes tour on Saturday where private homes are open to the public. On Sunday of the same weekend, the association hosts the annual Cemetery Stroll in Maple Hill Cemetery. These two events are worth the wait each year for those who are students of architecture or Huntsville history. In 2004, there are five homes, one church and two private gardens on the tour.
This garden perfectly accents the home which was believed to have been built prior to 1818. Harvilee Harbarger helped design the garden, which compliments the antebellum well house and carriage house. The peonies, groundcover, and seasonal flowers invite visitors to relax and admire the beauty. Among the most interesting features of this garden is a weather vane over the gazebo. Jeanne McCowan brought this treasured memento from her family home "Oaklawn." It is even more special to Jeanne because the model for the weather vane (a man on a horse) was her father.
