The first Saturday in May is always a treat for Huntsville residents and visitors.  The Huntsville Pilgrimage Association sponsors the annual historic homes tour on Saturday where private homes are open to the public.  On Sunday of the same weekend, the association hosts the annual Cemetery Stroll in Maple Hill Cemetery.  These two events are worth the wait each year for those who are students of architecture or Huntsville history.  In 2004, there are five homes, one church and two private gardens on the tour.

409 Randolph Avenue

This excellent example of Federal Style Architecture was probably built by noted Huntsville architect George Steele in the 1830's.  The fireplace mantel bears Steele's tradmark.  This home has undergone several renovations and additions, and was originally a halfhouse in the Federal Style with thirteen inch thick brick walls and three western bays.  A must-see in this traditional home are the 1830's-era double-panelled "Christian doors."  A cross adorns the top and the two panels at the bottom represent an open Bible.

This inviting home has a blend of antiques, rugs, and contemporary furnishings.  The kitchen countertops are unusual and striking.  Greek-revival woodwork and trim accentuate the nobility of this historic home.  Present owners are Linda and Mickey Plaxco.
