<VickyAL124>  anyone needing look up in Tuscaloosa co AL is welcome to send email to vickyal_124@yahoo.com
<Travis>  OK, Granny, thanks.
<GrannyAnne>  Thanks ADM...many of us ""out of staters"" are willing to pay a reasonable fee for help in Alabama counties!!!
<Cindy>  Does anyone here ever visit the Huntsville Library?
<imtangle>  Can you really go to any AL state office and get a birth or death certificate in 15 minutes????
<CyberLemon>  hi how
<huntsvilleADM>  hi, how--welcome!
<Travis>  Hi, How...
<imtangle>  hi how
<CyberLemon>  never heard of that imtangle
<huntsvilleADM>  Cindy--I'm in Huntsville.......but unfortunately, rarely make it to the library. (website keeps me too busy)
<GrannyAnne>  Hi how! Welcome!
<how>  hi everyone!
<VickyAL124>  not that I know of
<imtangle>  I think that's what the state site says.
<eelliott>  anyone with access to EARLY SETTLERS OF ALABAMA?
<huntsvilleADM>  Cindy--I have the Heritage Room info listed in my Alabama Genealogy pages: http://huntsville.about.com/cs/genealogy1/index.htm
<VickyAL124>  is that a book?
<huntsvilleADM>  eelliott--I have Early Settlers Of Alabama......
<imtangle>  What is considered ""early?""
<GrannyAnne>  imtangle, in my experience, the only place in Alabama that you can get birth/death certificates is from Montgomery. They are no longer kept by the counties. You cannot get a birth certificate unless the person was born 125 years ago (and they didn't keep records then!) unless you are immediate kin.
<huntsvilleADM>  I think it's only about a few counties....
<huntsvilleADM>  imtangle.
<huntsvilleADM>  The state records......I don't know about in a few minutes......I think you have to wait and they send them to you.
<CyberLemon>  I have gotten death certs from the mail, but not births
<imtangle>  Yes?
<eelliott>  HuntsvilleADM are the entries very large for each family?
<imtangle>  interesting. I'll have to go back and revisit that info
<imtangle>  I had hoped to just make a trip there and knock it out
<Cindy>  What I'm looking for is a listing of the people in Jackson County who filed a claim with the ""Southern Claims Commission"" for damages they suffered during the Civil War. I saw the book several years ago, which had listed the actual claim numbers for each person that filed a claim. Unfortunately, I can't find the pages I copied from this book.
<huntsvilleADM>  eelliott.....it's really more of a book--not a good index. Not just listing of families and surnames......more history.
<CyberLemon>  imtangle, regarding ""early"" I imagine that would be early 1800's
<Travis>  WILSON, BARRON, BROTHERS, BLEVINS, CALVERT, in Winston & Walker Counties.
<CyberLemon>  and before, when Bama was getting settled
<GrannyAnne>  imtangle, there is a form that you have to fill out, and you have to send $12 per certificate. The form is available on the web. I think that I just typed in Alabama Vital Statistics and it came up on one of the sites that came up then.
