Burritt Museum Facts -- Huntsville, AL

* Established as Huntsville's first museum in 1955 upon the death of Dr. William Henry Burritt who willed his mountaintop estate to the City for this purpose.

* Exists to interpret humandkind's interrelationship with the land in the Tennessee Valley.

* More than 132,000 people visit the site annually.

* Museum is open to the public 1,672 hours each year; park open 3,872 hours.

* Named one of the State's topt ten tourist attractions by Alabama Travel and Tourism Bureau for past several years.

*Supported by more than 120 volunteers who contribute over 17,000 hours annually to working at the Burritt Museum and Park.

*The Mansion houses exhibits on history and natural history of the Tennessee Valley and the life of Dr. Burritt.

*Extensive nature trail system in 167-acre park, links to Monte Sano State Park and Huntsville Land Trust trails. Award winning handicapped accessible nature trail used as national model.

* Serves over 15,000 school children through organized programs annually. An additional 12,000 served through Project Earthscope.

* Historic Park interprets 19th Century rural life in the Tennessee Valley through period-dressed interpreters working in five fully furnished log homes and a variety of support structures.

*Annual festivals include Wildflower Weekend in March, Earth Day in April, Sorghum Festival in September, Indian Heritage Festival in October, and Candlelight Christmas in December.

*Collections number over 10,000 objects, representing the spectrum of historical artifacts and natural history specimens in the the Tennessee Valley.

*Burritt Museum Center opened in July 1995 houses reception room, classroom, Museum store, and administrative offices.

*Ideal location for weddings, receptions, meetings, and other functions. A variety of spaces available through rental program.
