| The Red Clay Survey--Part 2 | |

"Diva (Music Series)" oil and collage on canvas
Artist: Benny Andrews, Juror
Artist, teacher, and arts activist Benny Andrews was the Juror for the 2000 Red Clay Survey. Andrews is known for his distinctive narrative style that remains closely tied to experiences and memories of growing up in the segregated rural South. His work has been featured worldwide and throughout the United States, including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta; the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York; and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C.
Andrews comments on the process of judging the works: "I found a sense of self-confidence in the great majority of the owrk, and it did not cater to any popular styles or trends. In fact, this self-assurance was one of the most refreshing things to experience in this diverse body of works. To me this went beyond the individual works and reflects what is occurring throughout the South as more artists draw upon their unique experiences to express themselves and all the chips to fall where they may."
Note: I hope you'll enjoy the selection of photos of this collection of works. I have tried to include as many of the local artists as I could; and other artwork of interest.
